This one has also reached the "it must be time to stop because I have no idea what to do next" stage.

Watercolour on 640gsm Arches medium. 650mm x 460mm.

It's alternative title is "The mice can get #######".

Cheers

It's really good Grant... still I can't help thinking that something's missing....a joint in the curled up paw and a empty can of VB under the other arm. Laughing

Your technique and composition are improving all the time Grant! This is really good. Warm and fuzzy sure (literally!), but good.

I took this one along to my local art group (hoping as always, they would give it a standing ovation. Result, in the words of Bluebottle: Not a sausage...) and got some interesting feedback. One new member said "Oh is it supposed to be a real cat? I thought it was a toy." I took it home and asked the family. My wife said "You've got the fur wrong". My daughter said "No - the fur's great... you ARE going to do some more work on it aren't you?"

So I guess it's not done yet... will post it again when I think I've finished it, again.

Constructive criticism may hurt, but does good in the long run. Waiting to see the improved version of what to me looked like a tired carpet (sorry!). Not want it yet.

I get that sort of thing from my family as well....and then as soon as the painting is exhibited...it sells...(most of the time)
People get used to seeing your work...and as they say, familiarity breeds contempt.

NEVER ask your family what they think. They are coming from a totally different space! It's a fabulous work. Maybe a bit of tone in the white fur under chin??

Actually Stefan, I think you've hit the nail on the head. If you don't want it, I've definitely got some work to do. The 'yet' means there's hope... Smile

Deep down, I knew I hadn't got it quite right. I was hoping that maybe nobody would notice.
I think the family are honest. They're prepared to call it as they see it.

Cheers

Take #2. Have done some more work on the fur. Not sure if it looks any different at this size.

Thinks I'll put this aside for a little while and go paint something easier, like carpet.

Great. Can I have it now? The Pook can have the previous one.

G'day
I'm a newbie but my two cents worth is the fur works better on the first one, any more work and it'll look really overworked I reckon.
I really like it, it's an interesting compostion, colours look good, and I don't even like cats, but please don't hold that against me!
cheers

I think this is a lovely painting. As the owner of two cats I see this 'pose' often. Smile

A suggestion I would like to make if I may. I love the cat and the wrought iron at the back, but how about making the shading on the bench just a tad darker. I think it would just finish it off.

A real nice painting though .. thanks for sharing.

Hi Ingrid, Welcome. Very Happy

Grant, I think I liked the first one the best too, it may have just needed a tiny bit more highlight to the centre of the cats front & perhaps darkened it's sides a fraction more.
But at first look I thought it was lovely, you did a great job of the fur. Smile

Pearl.
