Hi Nichelle, to re use the canvas, absolutely smother it in texture paste, molding medium or acrylic 'spac' filler (bostic cheap one from bunnings) .
I sometimes smooth it on with a paint scraper, other times i have used old credit cards, gift cards etc...
You can get different textures from using an old butter knife, and i have just started playing around with a palette knife (loads of fun!!)
I havent found a way of getting the paint off (maybe paint stripper??) it might be to harsh on the canvas??
It is easier to just build up layers, and play around a bit... the worst that can happen is that it stays in its current state and is never used!!
You could create a collage if it really goes pear shaped!!
Where is the art show in cranbourne?? Can anyone enter?? Is it the exhibition in the library?? |

Darn, i was hoping for the non textured affect lol...may have to paint it white and sit on it until i figure out best way to use it maybe. thanks though its what i thought might be the case .
The artshow, I am not sure if its Casey artists only though. Ad below. You have to register interest by 1 june 2009. I found it in local paper the other day. It might be actually City of Casey (victoria) artists only:

Casey Made is an opportunity to be a part of a large scale group exhibition.
Registrations to participate in Casey Made are due on 1 June 2009. Places are limited so register now!
Come along & see the work of Casey's many talented visual artists on display at The Factory Rehearsal Centre for the Arts, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne East on 4 & 5 July from 10am-4pm.
Casey Made is part of Council's 2009 Winter Arts Program. For further information contact Council's Arts Officer on 9705 5200 (reception ph number) or visit www.casey.vic.gov/arts"
I did chat with the Arts Officer, you just need to register interest by 1 june and submit information about the work & photo of work by 22 June. Its free to enter. There is no competition aspect to the artshow. Works can be sold with no commission. Size limit is 90cm x 90cm (1mx1m) or 60cm for sculpture. | Hi Nichelle you could turn the canvas over and use the back just put some gesso on and start again .. I take acrylic paint off wooden panels with water and steel wool , but not sure if you could do it on canvas without damaging the canvas surface,,, but by far the simplest way is just to use the back of the canvas |

Thanks Tango,
Sounds like good idea..even just to put a new canvas over the frame might work, I am just unsure how to do it or who can do it for you.
I ended up using a new canvas, its not quite the same base for the main pic but still useable. Um...I got an inspiration to reuse the original canvas in a different way, so have repainted the entire canvas with black paint. If I reuse it with a moulding medium base I should be able to reuse it quite easily.
Amazing though...I have had Atelier Interactive paint that i had mixed sitting in a small plastic bowl with cling wrap over the top. It is still fluid and hasnt dried yet...its been 3-5 days! I even used an old herb/spice bottle to hold a premixed color to keep it fresh and i was able to use it for redoing the 2nd canvas. So it meant i could reuse the same colors for the 2nd canvas, even if the affect ended up slightly different to the original. I love that fact that this stuff doesnt dry if you keep it in an airtight container. & I can keep the premixed paint just in case. I think it depends on how much paint & how much water is in the mix though. |

Hi there,
Just to introduce myself I am a budding artist just out of art school. I finished my theory mid way this year. It hasn't left me a lot of time for the fun stuff but hopefully I can get myself organised to start entering competitions. I love paint, a lot of last years work and a bit this year was done in oils. Prior to that I used acrylics and am just starting to come back to acrylics now. I also love object making, textile type organic things which often make their way into my images.
I have also been lucky enough to start working with Chroma part-time, just recently. I hope to be able to assist people with their questions but also have so much to learn about art making this forum is a good place to continue the search.
Nichelle, I read what you asked about reusing canvases. I know you've found a solution to your original question but for the future- we had a girl at art school who used to use quite a bit of paint stripper on her canvases to get the effect she wanted and never had a problem as far as I know about damaging the canvas.
You might try this for the more textural or impasto areas and a bit of sanding to take the rough stuff back. If you prop your canvas vertically and can hold or wedge a board behind the area you need to do and do it gently. You can also stretch the canvas if it has come loose through this process by pouring boiling water over the canvas to tighten it up again. Similarly your next layer of gesso will also tighten it up from the reworking. I have done quite a lot of canvases this way.
Hope that this helps.

| I agree with Grant. I understood the different numbers signified the cost of ingredients. The more costly the pigments, the higher the series. |

Yeh....... I've checked with our paint maker and the reason for the relationship between series number paints as the number increases relates to the higher cost of pigment involved re- scarcity or difficulty in accessing it. All other components in the paint are standard between colours.
