Our art group did old sheds, preferably in line & wash. Somehow mine became a full watercolour excercise, but with some lines I would rather have left out, in hindsight. If I was doing this one seriously, I'd work on the layout a bit as having the building centered is a bit static. I added the foreground fence at the last minute to try to force some depth, but the posts are reading more like stone than distressed timber, and it would have been better to have a post overlap the shed bit...
Cheers

It works well Grant. I agree with your critique.
I like the dryness in the fence posts.
And the shed's good too, a real renovators delight. |

Thanks Daniel - I enjoy distressed textures... probably because nobody can tell if they're right or not...
This is very much the sort of thing you'd expect to find at a weekend market... I still like sheds, but now I try to add a bit more dynamic, so they're not such a postcard..
Cheerss

I really like it. I think you have captured the rustic old feel of the shed. I think adding the wire fence was great and really created interest.
Not sure about the background trees...probably needed a bit more blue/grey to give it depth...but as you said a (not so) quick study. |

..and to be honest, I'm struggling with trees. There are a number of paintings I've done that I think are let down by the trees. Think I'll do deserts from now on...

Hey Grant.
I think you have done a great job.
The prob with watercolor is you can fix it like you can acrylics or oils.
I think the Sheds look great and the addition of the fence was a good idea as it adds that extra detail/interest.
I would suggest that maybe (next time) you raise the left post to be higher then the right because atm everything is slopping to the left and leading you out of the picture. If you had the fence higher on the left it would balance out all those lines and keep your eye within the space.
I have to agree that I think the trees are the weak point of the work. Everything else has been done with detail and care but the trees just seem to be laid on. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh.
I think that the best thing to do would not be to just paint deserts but to get some ref pics of trees and some spare sheets of paper and really work out how to make them work! You could research how other artists paint them in watercolor as well. That way when you come to paint another tree (if you are paitning landscapes I'm sure that wont take long ) then you will be able to do it with confidence and that will really help your painting.
I hope this helps. _________________ web:www.bretthayesart.com |

That would be a really good idea, which is why I've avoided it like the plague...
You are, of course, dead right and I will have to bite the bullet and actually practice something. Sigh. First Stairway to Heaven*, and now this....
