The South Australian arts community is mourning the loss of Cathleen Edkins, who died on Monday after a short illness.
Riddoch Gallery staff were grief stricken when Miss Edkins died just three weeks before the opening of an exhibition of her work.
The 86-year-old realist painter, known as the “artist horsewoman”, was a resident of The Oaks aged care facility in Yahl.
The gallery’s art collection manager Jaqcui Porter had been preparing for the exhibition of Miss Edkins’ work when she received the news about her death.
A collection of the work of Miss Edkins and artist Margaret French, titled Women of Significance, a tribute to Cathleen Edkins and Margaret French, will be held at the gallery from September 19 to December 17.
Ms Porter described the artist as one of Australia’s most outstanding and said her lifelike paintings in a romantic traditional style were favoured among traditionalists and equestrians worldwide.
“Miss Edkins’ work was inspired by her deep love and understanding of the land and animals, particularly horses,” Ms Porter said.
“Her work fetched high prices at auctions, the highest to date being $34,000.”
Miss Edkins never married and chose to live with her parents on their OB Flat farm until they died.
“She was brought up as a woman from the upper class and everyone called her miss,” Ms Porter said.
A close friend of Miss Edkins, Heather Dennis, remembered Miss Edkins as a “very self composed and autocratic woman.”
“We used to go out in the field regularly for 15 years to paint together…she was extremely fond of animals, but kept to herself when it came to people,” Ms Dennis said.
Miss Edkins has won many art prizes throughout her life, including the International Lipizzaner Art Prize in Quebec and the O’Donnell Art Award.
Her paintings are in collections in Australia, England, Ireland, New Zealand, the USA, Japan and Europe.
