I am feeling a teeny bit outnumbered by the realists here so I thought I would pop in and say Hi to the contemporary scene! I know you are out there!

I used to be a realist. I used to paint and draw very realist works. now I am working largescale contemporary pieces and looking into deeper meanings. since the accident I have had a lot of emotional moments and my art is a really good way for me to express them. I feel as though I have progressed a lot through having the time and having the will to express my feelings through art. I do a lot of figurative works but am lately getting into impasto and collage. many of them are to do with pain or my body image and coming to terms with my disability.

I will put up some images soon. but in the meantime, tell me about your contemporary works and put up some photos!

Cheers,
Jen

Hi Jen,
I haven't got anything to post yet, but I am dabbling in a couple of things - I'll see how they go, purely exploratory at the moment.

This is a reproduction of a miniature doodle, painted with acrlics on 25mmx25mm canvas in about 3 minutes. It was not meant to be realistic or traditional, I was aiming for spontaneous abstraction. Is it contemporary art

Ricardo, I love the top one! its really beautiful. ChinaBeach, I think they are lovely, what techniques did you use? I especially like the top one.

This was what I call a 'breakthrough work' it came directly from my mind to my brush with no conscious intervention. It is a response to my pain and injury and the very first work that I feel I can truly deem as expressionist. creating it was like excising a painful wound, I was almost suicidal when I was finished but it was a first step towards understanding and accepting my injury. I keep it up in my studio as a reminder.

This was an assignment piece - response to the word 'street' I was afraid to do it at first but then I realized that it was quite cathartic. it is collaged and ink on paper. my husband turned white when he saw it and ran away - I, strangely, count that as a good response.

None of these are 'nice' pictures but I am pleased with the results even though it took a lot out of me to do them. I will pop some of my contemporary nudes up later but for now I am rambling (again). I like to discuss the meanings behind them as I never used to have meaning in my work. it still surprises me!

Cheers,
Jen

Much thanks for your kind words.

I can create an almost marble/cloud effect with 2 colours. I worked a few months with a house painter who also did these sorts of effects (mind you he was quite jealous since it took me a few weeks to work out and him much much longer Razz)

Other than that I just use anything I can get my hands on as a stencil.

The top one is done with random shapes and just different spray patterns, the second is me branching out into paints that arent in cans and the 3rd is one stencil shape used in differnt ways.

I really like your work minxdragon, I would deffinetly love the second one on my wall... Laughing

contemporary
/kuhn'tempuhree, -pree/
adjective
1. belonging to the same time; existing or occurring at the same time.

I don't know if that definition justifies inclusion in this thread, but here is my son's first work for 2006, poster paint and a tiny bit of charcoal abstraction on finest quality butcher paper, 900 X 700.

He turns 3 in about a month. Very Happy

The work in progress. With my contemporary (1986) Confused HSC major work in the background! Almost 20 years less contemporary??

I love the ambiguous nature of contemporary art, it also allows the viewer to tap into there own world of imagination.

Hi Jen, I have just stumbled into this thread - still so many threads that I haven't even looked at yet.
Just wanted to let you know that I really responded to your second piece. It has great energy, resonance and feel for the materials.
Cheers
