I always liked the perspective on the cutlery, Dahz. The palette always reminded me of midnight, for some reason. Like sitting in a dark kitchen watching a moon shadow create linear tines as though they were sun dials of night.

The others are very reflective of color interplay; a melding to produce form within the imagination. That yellow is molten in "under fire". Glad to see your work again.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback dahlink friend !

the piece titled "under fire' was one of my paintings hanging in my first solo showing a few months ago - I titled the whole exhibition " A Sense of Place " and that particular piece was a reaction to the space our whole planet feels to be in lately- I guess most of what I have been working on past and present is reactive.

My artist's statement read as -

" A series of Expressionist Abstract works sharing visual thoughts, observations and personal impressions very much influenced by a deep love for the undulating patterns, textures and rhythms of the Australian landscape; accompanied with an intense fascination as Mankind races to cross new boundaries in Science, Medicine, and the exploration of the vast Unverse, but, at the same time tempered by a constant and increasingly growing concern for the future of the Sensitive and very Fragile Ecosystem on our own beautiful Planet 'teetering' on a brink of 'No Return' .

Sorry if this is too 'long-winded' but in a nut-shell it's those thoghts that guide my brush and pencil etc.....[ except for the occasional me-ander or sidetrack into other things]

Thank you again dahlink for taking the time to respond.

Smile

Well, since I just joined I may as well show you some of my stuff.

'Memories' : http://eejot.com/images/art/paint/memories.jpg
'Mystery' : http://eejot.com/images/art/pcp/pcp021.jpg
'Elephants Ate My Strawberries' : http://eejot.com/images/art/paint/elephants.jpg

They're all pretty recent. I've mostly gone through the phase of the first two and am wanting to explore more spontaneous works like the third. I've completed several, but feel there are quite a few more in me.. At least I'm not bored with it yet Laughing

I try to jasmine Wink

Can't live off of my art yet.. The mortgage would never get paid! Overall I've had more interest from Europe and USA than Australia. I'm yet to have a solo show though, which is on my "10 things to do" list. Never really pursued the commercial gallery scene, and haven't stayed in one place long enough over the last few years to organise my own show.. Maybe 2007 will be the year since I know I'm in Perth until at least June.

Just curious to know what people consider contemporary art to be. I think there is a bit of confusion that only abstract based work is considered contemporary.

I have noticed that too which is why I have stayed out of this thead before now. There is plenty of abstract work that could not be considered contemporary (Kandinsky anyone?) and plenty of work that is contemporary and not abstract.

To me contemporary is about current artistic culture / practice. Art that engages with contemporary life in some way.

Cheers

I tend to think that properly used, contempory is a term for art that is a result of currently valid concepts, more than the look of a work dictating whether it is contempory or not. A work that is realistic, (painting, sculpture photography) can very easily be either. Don't mean to be difficult. Wink Laughing

I don't know if there is a definitive definition of Contemporary Art. It seems to change from day to day.

Last week, I read how Manets paintings were painted directly from photographs of contemporary models (complete with 20th Century shoewear marks on Jesus's feet).

Yesterday I read that a philosopher in America thinks that the age of postmodern cynical in art is at an end and beauty will again be the ultimate concern of art...

What will happen tomorrow?
