I'd like to share a recent experience in China with those interested in casting their works.
I'd been creating my works in all types of mediums till I decided bronze was the way to go in future.
Now we all know casting in bronze is expensive and usually this holds an artist back.
My works cost about 4k-6k to cast here. If they can do it!!!
I took off for Shanghai a couple of weeks ago to see for myself what they can and can't do there. Good job I went too.
Not only was China impressive, so was their quality of work. I guess knowledge is passed down the family chain.
They can even enlarge or downsize something you want casted. Even from pictures.
And the cost?
About 1/7th of what I used to pay!
I hear you saying "transport, import duty"!
If the item cost YOU under $1,000, no import duty. If it's over 1k, 10% applies for art imports.
Transport is how expensive you want it. Slow boat from China, cheap. Air, expensive.
So if your interested look up china art foundry. I deal with John Chenn. He looked after me very well and would not hesitate recommending him/them.

i've talked to him and yes, they can do small glass objects.
I also asked him if he can reproduce my works in glass and he said he'd get back to me on that. He's also sending some pics of a dragon I'm getting cast so I'll post them up as soon as I get them.
Like an expectant mum I am!!! |

| I just got my mould (very small) from China after waiting for a month - delays with posting - after spending $170.00 - its shit - the rubber was very thin and torn - the casing around the mould all crumbled like bread crumbs - be aware - maybe John Chen is good at making bronze but not rubber moulds - waste of money and time. BE WARNED. DEVI |

| Hey guys my mould turn out good - I think when u deal with china u have to spell everything out clearly - John was good - It was my fault for not spelling out what I wanted - learnt a lesson - very precise instructions - it works. |

oppps, my fault!
I shoud have told you about that. Once you make it VERY clear what you want, all's well. The trick is as you say, spell it out.
I'm working on my dragon, once I have a few pics, I'll post them up.
Because of the under-cuts and detail I have a lot of grinding and cleaning up to do. I expected that as I can finish it off as I please.
I should have a gargoyle finished soon so I'll post that up too. |
