I can't help feeling a little teeny disapointed with the arts here. Yes it's so much better than at home, but no one wants to know me. I've written to dozens of arts organisations and no replies. I just want to get involved. I'm not even asking to be paid. I just want to get some experience!!!! Please if you are reading this, just give me a chance. Help me feel wanted! im begging...........................I'm free, there's no catch.

Maybe you should try putting that in your letters.
But I really hope you get a reply soon, I know what it's like to send out heaps of letters and not get a single reply.
Good Luck

Well yes maybe I should be putting that in my letters.
I can't believe no one here replies. Its so rude. Just an email with one word would be great even if it's a no, but I feel that Tassie arts professionals are just not keen on helping artists? Do you think thats true? They don't seem as open or welcom as those in Brisbane. People believe that aussie people are the friendilest people on earth, but I dont think so, I think Its a myth. Aussie people are no friendlier than those in England and Ive already met lots of really nice people, but they just dont want to go that step further. hmmmm
cheers for your reply

We were once friendly, but times changed, sadly, people no long have common courtesy, and don't take the time to help others. If you had sent me a letter, I would have replied. I still stop to help others in need.
Finger crossed for you, that someone you have sent a letter replies, and offers to help you

Hi Donna
Have you joined the Salamanca Arts Centre.
The Salamanca Arts Centre is home to many artists, crafts people, arts training, community, visual and performing arts organisation.
Have you been to the Long Gallery and joined with the artists who hold regular exhibitions there and at the Sidespace Gallery.
Have you checked out the Arts Tasmania web site to see if there is anything there for you.
There are plenty of gallery openings to attend, sign up to recieve emails from these fine galleries for opening nights .... there you can meet all the artists from all over Tassie.
I've lived here for three years now and have had no problems being part of the art community here.
There are so many art organisations here to be part of. The festival 10 Days of Art in Tasmania is a fantastic concept, not only to see the all the diverse work but also to visit artists studios, galleries etc.
Tassie is a great place for the creative spirit and many well known artists have made it there home.
I have lived in many places here in oz and north america, and for me tassie has it all. And as far as exposure of your work ... one can do it here as well as on the mainland.
So please be patient, but you have also got to make the effort. Believe me this place has it all.
Oh, "Arty Farts in Tassie" , not a very good start.
Cheers, Shane

Hiya Shane....
I love Salamanca! I love the arts scene in tassie but I dont know how to be part of it. How do you join Salamanca? Do they have a club or somthing?
Ive written to them and after a second letter they said nope can do, there are no jobs or voluntry work. The same with Arts Tasmania and Arts@Work.
Ok I will definetly look out for gallery opening nights. I though you had to be well known to attend How do I find out? Ask each gallery I suppose.
Thankyou for your reply! I'll try harder. Im so desperate to make Tassie home.

Hi Donna
Go to any gallery and ask to be put on their mailing list to let you know of opening nights. Great way to meet artists, collectors and the general public who love the arts.
As for Salamanca go to the Long Gallery and opposite is their office and ask for an application form to join the society. Ask, don't write.
You had mentioned earlier that some Tassie arts professionals are not willing to help out...who are they? Interested to know.
Regards, Shane |

I don't want to get into trouble Shane.........................Salamanca, Despard Gallery. Actually all the galleries in Hobart haven't emaild back even. Arts@Work did eventually, CAST were great and got straight back to me. Hmm there are others, because I've written to dozens of people. Thats all I can think off. Im not bothverd. Im sure they are really busy anyway cheers for the tips.
Yea I know I should have gone in and spoken to people myself, but Im deaf and I don't want to give it away at the first sight. It doesnt usually help. Im shy too,

Donna , unfortunately most galleries treat all email requests ( other than those to buy art ) with disdain
However , everyone is welcome at an opening
Just get yourself on the mailing list of as many galleries as possible and go to the openings , fight your shyness and meet people.
Here is a clue the scruffier ones at the opening are usually the artists or students looking for a free drink......they are the ones to talk to if you want to get into the scene.
Clue no 2 : don't email, just ring a gallery and say " I would like to come to your next opening, who is the artist and when is it on "?
100% guarantee that they will gladly welcome you. PS you don't even need an invite, no one checks, just turn up , grab a drink and look interesting.
There are quite a few galleries in Hobart, check them all out ....including Dick Bett & Criterion..
Anyway , the director of Despard gallery is known to talk under water, just walk in there and I'll guarantee you he wont shut up |

here in Tassy you dont just jump in and your their. You have to push and fight your way in, Ofcause no one wants to know you, so you have to make them know you. People wont want to know you until you do somethng to grab their attention.
I have a friend 4 years ago she tried getting in the art biz but no one wanted her, so she freelanced and did volanteer work and just kept puching, now she runs a quuckly growing gallery in wynyard and runs several art schools in the community, and has even started getting offers from over seas to go work.
If you expect to just be accepted straight away I say give up and do something else...Its a gradual thing you have to work at and if you have the balls and persistance you just might get there in time. |
