ooh touchy. Hah tasmanians look like they welcome you with open arms, but when you try to get to know them, they don't want to know. I major arts organisation told me that on my first week there and he was tasmanian himself. I was accepted into the art world far better hahahah than in general socierty in TAS. Crazy islanders. Do you know..............even my relatives didn't want to know, one of whom Ive been pen friends with for 10 years. Ahh I jumped ship long ago..Life is too short!..................So long my friends......................................I'm going back to Australia ............oops mainland. |

Yes, Im abit touchy cause mainlanders are always harrassing me about being tassy born *bums to them all*......anyways, you havent met the right people then...the northwest coast of Tassy is great...all you silly mainlanders always come over and got straight to hobart or Launceston, BLEH! Dont go to the city areas, you always go to the towns on the northern coasty thing.
I assume you havent had a good travel around Tassy, kinda only stayed in da one spot? ya cant judge us all on a very small portion for brainless tools. |

I live in Tasmania and I am really interested in art in Hobart in paticular. I know the music scene here is pretty exciting, so Bluemonks(Shane's) positive outlook makes me even more excited about things to come.
Thanks Shane,
Allison. |

Mad Mandy is right, the south has no soul. Come to Northern Tasmania. She is, however, on the wrong side of the Tamar - the northeast is the friendliest part of Tassie!
But then perhaps you've gone back to Queensland anyway... For some reason Queenslanders seem to have the highest recidivism rate... |

| Hi The Pook , what actual town are you located in ????? I have just had a trip around Tassy and think Strahan was the best small town I visited, there was something about it reminded me of Port Douglas in North Queensland and I loved the arts in Hobart, as most things were within walking distance. the only down side was the trip over on the ferry I made the mistake of going over on the daylight trip , boring BORING , there was a lot of sea to see, and trying to sleep on the return night time journey was almost as bad. |

I just want to throw my hat in the ring to support Tassie. I love Tassie (though I admit it is a little too small for me to actually want to live there).
There are some really good artists in Tassie and though there aren't many galleries they are generally pretty good.
I really doubt Donna's experience had anythng to do with an 'island' mentality. I think getting 'into' the art scene anywhere can be difficult and just takes time for people to know you are serious.
Agree with you Tango though, the daylight ferry trip is boring as can be.

To answer tango's question, I am in the biggest little town in the northeast - Scottsdale. We have a great little local gallery here, and there is another good one at Lilydale nearby.
I am only an amateur, but we have a few really good professional artists in the area, such as Leonie Duff and John Gibb. John is a friend of mine and you can see his work at http://www.johngibb.com.au/. I will post some of my own work to these forums when I get around to it.
I also doubt Donna's experience had anything to do with an 'island mentality' and suspect it had everything to do with being a Queenslander. (I have to say that, being an ex-patriate New South Welshman!) |

What kind of interest would there be out there for a two day charity art event showcasing emerging and established artists and their TASMANIAN inspired art? Any particular areas to concentrate on? Advice? please let us know.

| South of Hobart there's a gallery that has recently opened up offering 25 youth art scholarships, they seem really excited about helping creative things to happen, it's in Geeveston (near the Tahune air walk) and is called The Cotton Duck Gallery. |

Here are the entrants in case anyone is interested:

I didn't think all that much of the winning entry to be honest. My favourite was Skye Bequet's "Pieces of She". What I liked about it was that it was done in half a dozen different media (not mixed media, but discrete pieces of each kind), showing her proficiency in each. But perhaps I am biased since she is a local, exhibiting at the gallery at Derby where I also have a few paintings. |

| yeah Skye's work doesn't really do it for me, but I didn't even find important time to enter the competition and Skye has two kids and found time, I'm regretting it once again this year. Is the Dirby Gallery a nice space?? |
