hi... i keep getting invites to enter art shows around the state... i was just wondering what people think... it involves a bit of travel getting the paintings there... but i suppose it is more exposure...what do you think

I think it is a necessary evil. It is a way of promoting your work and if you are recognised it is even better. Expensive though and, for me, little reward.

It's definitely worth it. Recieving any and all notice you can brings you more leads and more on your CV, and more Kudos. Success breeds success. You've got to get even those little group shows on your CV to show that you are working non-stop and 100% serious about what you do. I know of some artists who submit to competitions and prizes for years and years before they start to find success. You have to take it by the balls and apply for every grant and fellowship you can, enter every competition you can. Personally I've been working for 21 years and after all that time, finally this year has brought success with a sizeable DFAT artists project grant, the Janet Holmes a Court grant, and as a semi-finalist in Head On Portrait Prize. It's only May and as far as I am concerned these triumphs are just the beginning and I want many more things coming to me before the year is through. If you want this badly enough, you will get it for sure and come out on top.

No problem, just don't give up. If you are feeling uninspired and over it, have a break for as long as you need, is the secret.

Hi Pete - it depends what you want to get out of it.

On the minus side, I think it's unlikely a judge will go for your style (that's not a criticism, just a recognition of what judges look for. ) The majority of people will be expecting bowls of fruit, gum trees and kids playing on the beach.

On the plus side, we all have to start somewhere. I can think of a good reason not to enter anything -it's too far, it costs too much, etc. but ultimately you can do something, or you can do nothing. If you don't have a better plan, exhibiting in art shows is a fairly painless way to get your stuff out there.

I've been very lucky with my experience - I entered our local show purely because I had set it as a personal goal (I need deadlines.) but expected everybody to take one look and go "Struth! C'mon Gladys, let's get back to those nice gum tree pictures..." Instead, I won a prize. On the strength of that, I rang up a local gallery - they asked if I'd been in any shows. Yes. How did you go? I won a prize. Right, come in and let us have a look...

The moral to the story is that you make your own luck. It is better to keep moving and doing something, than stop and do nothing.

Now, if I would only follow my own advice....

Cheers

Grant

Grant I agree with you about Pete's style in competitions, but when I think about it some more, Pete's style is very similar to Australian Gallery's successful painter Kerry Lester, and Kerry has been an Archibald finalist 16 times, so who's to say for sure - if nobody tried, there's never be anything new.

I think anything goes as some judges get tired of looking at gum trees and still life pots of flowers , so something different might catch their attention, so dare to be different

Absolutely!! Sorry, I didn't mean to cast aspersions on Pete's art at all, just commenting on what judges are usually looking for. This applies to me as well - I'll never win at Camberwell because I'm not 'painterly' enough. (at least that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!)

Cheers

Go Tango!! I sorta meant that the judges at Camberwell seem to like a style of painting that I don't do. The winning entries are extremely good pieces, and you've done brilliantly to be in such company. A better example would be like entering a Turner in the Archibald.... it's just not what they're looking for.

Speaking of the 'anyone can' idea, the first year I was in our local art group, I asked if anybody was entering the local art show. They all looked horrified at the idea. I put some pieces in, and they very kindly turned up for moral support on the opening night, and were stunned to see me win a prize. On the strength of that, they've decided that if I can win, ANYBODY can win, so they're all madly getting stuff ready for the next year! Smile

How do you get sent invites??? I seem to have to trawl the web and download entry forms. Tried to get info on the Marymount College show and just couldn't find it anywhere. I am going to enter the Trinity Lutheren College show...first show ever...and maybe the RQAS show.
