I think the one of Heath is terrific & as everyone says very 'of the moment' but I think my favourite is Simpatico by Barry McCann - beautiful painting. I don't know who the people are but feel as if I do - he has so captured their personalities - they live & breathe. I also like Grabowsky by Peteris Ciemitis & Dr Joseph Brown by Hong Fu. Going out to see it Mon week & really looking forward to it this year.

Thanks for the link to on the 'Wendy after 2 cups of coffee' painting Sunday. It was interesting to watchand gives the painting abit more meaning.
I am also looking forward to seeing this years show. Its not strange to find that it is all the regulars exhibiting with the addition of a few new artists. Rolling Eyes But not to worry.
I'm looking forward to seeing Alexanda McKenzies painting, Del Kathryn Bartons the Heath Ledger (very interesting timing Rolling Eyes ), Robert Hannaford and a few others.
Will be interesting to see the Wendy as well.
I will be going next Sun (first weekend) so hopefully I will get to see them all without having people standing all over me. Shocked
Will let you know what I thought.
Very Happy
Oh, and I'm not sure what will win but I do agree that Del has a good chance (being very popular atm). They just bought out an article about her in this months Art and Aus. If shee win he prices might double and then I'll def not be able to afford one! Shocked Laughing Laughing

I agree that the photos on SMH and even on the Archibald site are too dark. Phillips's "Wendy After Two Cups of Coffee" looks tonnes better in proper light in the slideshow. There are others that can't even be seen.

Hi Sunday - Thanks for the link. I like this Phillips guy, though I had never previously seen his work.

I've been thinking about having a bet on the Archibald. Quilty is out to 14 dollars. Good odds I think. The odds are not as I thought they might be ordered.

Thanks for that Simon, his treatment of water is impressive.

By the way Simon, you know that little painting I am working on at the moment - it looks woefully inadequate now after seeing John Phillips work Rolling Eyes

Yes very nice. With his portrait of Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, however, I don't think he's quite captured the essential expression of the man.

I'm actually liking his portrait of Doctor Karl. It's interesting that he seems to be explaining something - what he does most days. It's not as dramatic as his portrait of Wendy Whitely though. There's something spooky about her.

Sure jelly bean; I've been meaning to update my website so I'll get on to it over the next few weeks and then pop a link in here. In the meantime I have three nocturnes at Linden until the show finishes this weekend, numbers 634-636.

That's part of its appeal to me; love that spookiness!

I'm still trying to suss it out. Who's going to win? Maybe I'm missing something, but for me it's between Ben Quilty, Jon Phillips and Sam Leech.

I'm yet to make any bets, though I think I might.

hey Simon,

I followed the link to find your work. Some great stuff there. Congrats.
Do you own a citroen? What brings you to paint cars? It's quite appealing. Does your work sell easily? I can imagine it would in Sydney.

Sunday,
I had a search, and I think I found your work. Gorgeous stuff. I love night scenes in paint - in the subtle changes of light, there is a lot going on. Thanks for sharing. What are you doing that's similar to Phillips?
