Oh..and KGB...read Desidrius Orban's book..."What is art all about", it will be a great help to you, it has invaluable knowledge, and very easy to read.
And if you would like to show me some of your work, i could perhaps suggest a few 'phrases' or germs of ideas which might spark a more confident discourse from yourself about your work?

I'm too watching this with interest. You see, I'm not much of a speaker and would love to rely on the visual. I have this fear that without the gab, a career in art is impossible. I did a radio interview recently, kinda surprised myself not that my performance was anything special, I believe in no BS approach. But far out, if a tiny solo show can summons that kind of attention, (I didn't think it would), I'm thinking that any further progress is going to get a whole lot trickier. I was a bit of a wreck at the opening. I've even thought about doing a public speaking course. I'm going to look up that book.

drawings...many artists feel the same way, and indeed find it hard to articulate what they do....perhaps that is why they have chosen this form of expression...to create visually.
dont get hung up on this...any pr stuff, can be done by others...good galleries should handle that..
or maybe you can befriend someone who is 'into' that talking stuff, and have them act as PR for you.
believe me...no-one expects artists to be able to talk!..
Wink
of course for your own self estemm, it is good to have the confidence.
a good trick is to write an imaginary interview with yourself...use interviews in publications you admire, as a sort of template...
write down the questions you think people would be interested in hearing, and answer them, honestly..but as interestingly as you can...
rehearse them if need be....there is no shame in that.
there are even books...interviews with artists..i know like the francis bacon one, by melvyn bragg...also there was a series of interviews with australian artists done years ago, by queensland univeristy press?...artists like andrew sibley etc..
in fact andrew is perhaps one of the most painfully shy people you would wish to meet...but because of what he does, and the work he produces, people accept that, and will be engaged with anything he says.
you are right..'live' interviews are very difficult, even eloquent people sometimes struggle..so i would, arrange press/visual pr, until you feel more confident.
as for openings, i have a friend, a very well know australian artist, who has had over 25 solo shows, and he has never heard one of the opening speeches!!...he usually slinks away somewhere with a beer, or a glass of red until all the 'ceremonies' are over..
dont worry, just relax.

Very Happy
Hi KGB, give yourself a break, just speak honestly, don't try to be too clever or highbrow. A lot of art theory and art discussion is a real wank anyway. The most important thing is that you are doing the art and the self promo thing develops in time with practice too. Be yourself.

Thank you leonore and artimouse - your feedback has relaxed me for the time being. I've got Orban's book on order, and will try to paint without thinking out long intricate sentences with lotsa big words to describe every stroke. Smile

Hi Brad, I live in Katherine NT and am trying to get some training but there's not a whole lot on offer up here and need to travel to Darwin or interstate. So maybe a contact list, etc for tuturs that are available for one on one trainging. Because I have to travel so far I'm looking for courses that are held full time for a week or so rather than a couple of hours here and there.

Hi Brad

Two ideas, I have recently enjoyed a course on how to start selling professionally (developing a portfolio, cv, artists statement, how to approach galleries etc) I found this info invaluable!

Also, as an artist wanting to get more exposure who hasn't actually started selling I would like to know how to go about entering competitions in Australia, how to find competitions, how to ship my art etc etc....

Cheers!

Hi Brad, has a quick look

Keep it relevant is all I can say. I get put off very quickly when I see adverts for horoscopes etc. Tacky. I also find that too many adverts on the home page also puts me off. I prefer drop down menues where I can search and not be bombarded with millions of websites as soon as I load the URL

These are my opinions tho so please don't be offended!!!!

Cheers
