When 'Quartz' came up recently in the Word Association thread my immediate thought was 'Rutilated' which probably seemed somewhat obscure.
However what immediately came to mind for me was the pendant shown here which I made about 35 years ago. The gold work is a bit crude but the piece of Rutilated Quartz is magnificent. It's about 28x32mm and has a buff top and faceted back.
Photo's not the best but hopefully you get the idea...
Thanks for taking a look |

I never got into cutting although my father did. This stone came from a lapidary shop near where I lived, they would often set aside unusual stones for me. |

Thanks Maria. Waaaaay long ago when I was a street vendor I would just love to see a Jewelery Girl walk up to the stand! I still notice the jewelry (especially new stuff) that a girl is wearing and chat about it. |

| oh nice bit of rutile quartz . l also make jewellery and l use semi precious stuff and thai silver for a bit of difference . would love to get into the polymer clay and really churn out some unusual pieces , but l'd probably end up keeping it all instead of selling it |

So...rutilated ??what does that mean ? Is it in reference to the lines through the stone ?? |

Yes. The golden threads are rutile crystals. I didn't know what rutile was composed of and found some interesting stuff when I looked it up.
Rutile is mainly titanium dioxide and is the primary source of the pigment for Titanium White paint. Also rutile microcrystals are responsible for the asterism in star rubies and star sapphires. I used to love those stones, especially the star rubies. Somewhere I have a picture of one set in a free form flower-like ring that was one of my favorites. |

| Natural star golden rutilated quartz and rare green rutilated quartz are really nice pics. The pic is good and clear one. The pendant is also good one but green rutilated is what make me eager to have one. |

| And I thought rutilated quartz was quartz that was no good any more. (apologies, unlike others, I couldn't resist). Lovely pendant btw. |
