Hi Gary,
Great work! Just wanted to ask you...did you use some kind of a stencil for the fish? If so, did you make the stencil yourself and if so to that...from what and how?
I'm interested in doing something like this with angels etc.

Hi Tobias
love the top and bottom paintings! The roses and fish are a great combination.
One of my arms is actually covered in goldfish and japanese flowers so I def like your choice of subject!
Hopefully the people of Norway like them and they sell!
Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
Kim, I believe that the fish would have painted using a spraycan and a stencil.
Stencils can be cut out of card using a scapel. Its abit tricky but the results are great.
If you would like to see great stencils check out Banksy's website.

Yep made my own stencil. The stencil was made on A4 paper but what i did was laminate it before i cut the image out so that i can use the stencil over and over (usually 50ish times) before i need to either make a new one or just use it as collage in another work. I like using stencils to build up alot of information quickly (background).
I'm just starting a new series where i am combining my textured effects with stencils. It is a series of famous faces throughout history ( Mona Lisa, Rembrant, Van gogh...to more recent less arty people like madonna, britney spears.... )
I just have to work out my photoshop program to do a colour separation of the images so i can give them more definition and shadows.
Stencils are so much fun but also can be alot of work...but worth it in the end.
Here is one of the new works i started a few days back. It is still in the very early stages of development...so it isnt ready for a critique just yet!
It is Madonna and the work is about judgement. U can see a faint outline of a cross behind her head but i intend to add all her arms and legs like she is in a yoga position in a box!

The exhibition was in Sept last year and i only managed to sell 1 work which was the 4th down from the top. I sold it too Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art...which was brilliant as they are very selective, apparently!
Actually i was disappointed with the exhibition because my work was hung in the downstairs space in the corner. Also being a foreigner and a newby on the art scene doesn't help either...but it takes time to get a name in a new country. Im having another group show with the same gallery in April so will be interesting to see how it will go. The gallery have told me they are really interested in my textured works not so much the stencils...but unfortunately i am |

On the other hand, once you do get known, maybe you have the advantage of being exotic? |

Hi Gary,
Thx for telling me your method of creating your stencils, I thought it would be something like that.
By the way, although I think KimO is lovely (we have met in person and I love her work)...I'm not her, I'm a different Kim

Aw shucks - thanks Kim - obviously all kims must be nice then.
I like the look of your new Madonna one Garry. Is that a blistered effect on that or a resist? How do you get that effect if you don't mind me asking? |

Yes it is a blistering effect, actually bubbles of air trapped under the paint. Im going to do a 'Technique of the week' on how to create the bubbling textures. Took me alittle while to get it perfected but worth it in the end. Oh by the way my name is spelt with one r so its just gary! |

Hi Gary,
Thanks for posting your techniques, great information provided.
I look forward to learning from you. I think the more artist's share with one another, the better. Thanks for being open with your work.
I don't know if I can help anyone with anything...but I'm sure there are other artist's out there who can, how 'bout sharing your techniques, artist?s?...I'll have a think and see what I can perhaps share also.

Artists are generally really secretative about their techniques, it is like getting blood out of a stone alot of the time. Which i can understand too. I just believe that knowledge is power and the more we share the more everyone grows.
I also think that by sharing these hands on techniques it might interest alot of younger artists to see that painting can be more fun and interesting than doing it on a computer...i still have a problem with digital art!...It is like kissing without the tongue so to speak! I know we are headed that way and i should embrass this new media but it won't happen over night. |

Perhaps some people prefer it for the same reason some people prefer kissing without the tongue - it's less messy! |
