Has anyone studied at a uni in Brisbane for a Bachelor of Fine Arts and/or a Dual degree of Bachelor of Eduation/Bachelor of Fine Arts?

The reason why I am asking is because I want to study to become a high school art teacher in a couple of years. I would like to know;
> what uni you went to?
>What the degree was called
>What you thought of the course?

Im thinking of going to Griffith at the QCA campus Southbank? Or maybe QUT. Just curious about your experience.

Hi Chrissy,

Good on you for wanting to be an art teacher! I have alot of respect for anyone who teaches and its always great to see more ART teachers wanting to share their skills and knowledge. All the best with it.

For anyone reading this a list of Art Colleges in QLD can be found here:

Hi Chrissy
At the moment I am enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts at QCA. A lot of my friends are doing the education bit also. I am pretty sure it is a grad dip.

I have done previous study as a graphic designer and now this one at QCA and have found the quality quite high. They have a really good set up, all the equipment you would ever need. The printmaking facilities are fantastic and the workshop is really great too.

No complaints about the lecturers. They are all pretty helpful and approachable. I am really happy with the quality of the program. They just updated it for this year.

Every now and then i wonder if it would be helpful to do a fine arts degree. It's what I initially wanted to do when I finished high school, but decided i needed a more 'steady' base - so I did a Commerce degree, which I finish at the end of this year.

SueBee what do u plan on doing once you've finished your fine arts degree? What is it that made you enrol?

Jasmine, hope you don't think I am raving, but thought it would make more sense if I told the story Smile

I did my first degree at QCA in Graphic Design (graduated about 9 years ago) because I thought that I would be practical and earn a living doing creative work.
Bad mistake.
I ended up earning decent money, but I also became a very unhappy and stressed out person. so much so, my health was really going downhill.

Last year I quit my job for various reasons and I just thought **** this! I am going to do what I want with my life. (Also, my Dad died at age 63 start of the year) Life is too short, I have to give it a go. Even if I fail, at least I know that I really tried.

I decided to go back to QCA because I was happy with my last degree there. Also I wanted to immerse myself in the whole thing. Meet heaps of people, learn as much as I can and do it properly from the start. It suits me. I also asked a lot of people already in the industry what they thought about QUT and QCA.

For me, it isn't really a matter of when I finish my degree. I am an artist now. I am already organising two group shows for next year with some friends at uni. I have found the lecturers to be encouraging in this respect.

I have a five year plan at the moment with goals that I consider to be attainable. I don't care what anyone says, I am going to be positive and successful and make a living out of being an artist.

I know that a lot of people are going to think or say...
you'll never do it
or
you are such an idealist
so I say...
pooh to you people! Smile
This is my dream. Others have done it, so I don't see why I can't.

It is working for me, but I can understand why some people may choose not to. It also helps that I have a part time design job at the moment to help pay for my art materials.

hi everyone,

i'm a new member and i want to thank suebee for sharing that. i am in a similar situation now. i have had a love affair with art my whole life, but chose a different, more "stable" career in science. i have been working in the industry for 3 years but am always stressed out, tired, unmotivated, and am yearning to throw in the towel and start my art career! i'm glad i'm not the only one who has experienced this!

i have now applied for a masters in 'bio-art' in WA in the hopes that the 4 years of uni weren't a total waste Confused

omg you girls sound exactly like me!!

i'm now working in retail full-time as a way of paying the bills....i did try living off my art at the start of the year...and it did kind of work...except that the money is very minimal - it takes time to build a name - and I found it very isolating. I guess that was my fault for not getting out and about with other artists as much as I should have, but there's still a lot of time you're alone with your art - and you can begin to internalise a lot of emotions etc...even though you ARE getting some of them out on canvas...

anyway...i'd love to know how everything's going....?

Good on you suebee. Your story sounds a bit like mine. i too did Graphic design at QCA also, but i graduated in '91, a LONG time ago. I hated design also, a souless profession. Having gone back to uni to do secondary art education, i became disolusioned with that too. Now after 2 years being on my own and persuing my lifes dream as an artist, things are really falling into place. dreams come true, they really do. i have a long way to go, but i've been travelling overseas, because of my art, plus when i return i will be working towards my first solo show in brisbane(well just north of brisbane, but close enough)
Dreams can really happen, you just have to believe in yourself and make them happen and work damn hard to make as many connections as you can. Being out of Brisbane for so long and out of uni for even longer, it was hard to break the shell of the art world, but I've made enough cracks now and the shell is just bursting open.
My advice, just go for it. If you dream, it will come.

I am in my second year of Bach of Fine Art/Dip Ed at QUT.

I do like i but it was not what I expected.... the course itself - in the practical side is very self driven. They are focusing more on us developing our own practice and then learn the teaching side of it.

I have not started the education side of it yet (except for my second teaching area) but am eagerly looking forward to it.

Please feel free to message me with any specific questions you may have and I will answer them the best I can. and if you ever want to come check out the studios/teaching areas let me know and I can show you around one day Smile

EDIT : oh I just realised you posted this back in 06 Razz What did you end up doing??
