I have found a couple of old cast metal things and I am trying to find out what they may be or what they were used for.

The most common guess seems to be a cooking stand or trivet but as they do not sit flat on any surface I doubt they would be used as a stand.

There are no holes or anything in the ends and they are a heavy cast construction about 6" and 8" at the longest.

Has anyone seen anything similar ?

I can't quite make out the number sequence cast into them. Try googling that number (if you already haven't). I used to sell a lot of collectables online and that worked for me more than once.

They are Bakers branding irons for flat breads and pastries they should have wooden handles, are the iron handles hollow so you could fit a wooden handle into them ?

I sent the photos to the metalwork department at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the UK and got the reply

"We have never seen anything like them"

Dug - they remind me of the wrought iron railings at old cemeteries. I think it's unlikely they're a post final, as they would be too easy to remove... but they have that sort of feel.

Cheers

The ends aren't hollow so that rules out them being used for anything where they might get hot (too hot to handle) but the handles have a wider bit at the end so they would not slip out of your hand easily.

The design on them is an acorn, so therefore it could have some symbolic value... perhaps like a symbol for growth.

it could still be used for baking but not at a hot stage. If they were pressed into clay would that give us a starting point?

Yes I think your are right Steve , they are probably ''bread stamps''which are now made in plastic..

QUOTE:-
In Turkmenistan, where nan is more commonly called chorek, the breads are more than 30 centimeters (12") across, made from soured dough, and often topped with a sprinkling of chopped lamb-fat to help keep them fresh. These big tandoor-baked breads occasionally have milk in the dough, giving the bread a tender crumb, and are stamped at the center with the end of a dowel or with a bread stamp, similar to the Uzbek one, known as a durtlik in Turkoman. http://www.saudiaramcoworld.com/issue/199505/on.the.flatbread.trail.htm

Communion or an Easter type bread stamps or for something religious? I have a vague memory of that cross pattern.
