Remember the Two Ronnies four candles sketch?
When I replaced all our Kitchen doors and drawer fronts my wife wanted these fancy metal handles that were $15.95 each. We needed 14 of them. So I went down the op shop and bought a lot of forks for 20 cents each, heated them with a butane torch and bent them into shape. I couldn't find 14 all the same design so I picked 14 different ones.
Total cost: $13.80 including the butane canister!

It was 3 days before my wife noticed our "fork 'andles"

They were ordinary stainless steel forks. Later, I did try some EPNS ones but as you said, the plating just burned off. You can bend the tines without heating them but you can't get the curves nice and smooth.

I do love things that are not what they appear to be. In our lounge room is the ugliest brown plastic aircon you've ever seen. It's only ever used for a few weeks in the summer and I'm too mean to buy a new one. The rest of the year it just sits there looking evil.
One day I decided to disguise it by fitting a front cover on it with velcro and this is what I came up with. It's all made from MDF offcuts and painted with acrylic paint. It didn't look very convincing as a bookshelf until I put the real books (and the fluffy toy) on the top. The electric cord gives it away a bit. Maybe I should paint that too. It can be removed if we want to actually use the aircon.

I friggen love both your ideas! The fork handles are a smart alternative and the aircon cover is great! Really great! I want to see other photos of your creative house now!

Absolutely amazing clive...these ideas are great! The fork handles are so clever, you could make a fortune is you tried selling them. Alls you need is one designer to catch on saying "there fabulous" and it will be a hit!
