No there's not. Not any more. They couldn't make enough to cover their rent and closed about a month after I moved here. I get all my art supplies over the internet.

All the best with the biz.. names... what a hassle, you see most people think their name is great and so do your folks and friends, rellies and the like, but if the business is successful and you want to sell it, if it's your name in the title then it means nothing for resale. hope you appreciate what I'm saying.

If you want free resources on business there is an aussie website and forum loaded with info on startups through to advanced business ideas. free buisness tips .com.au Wink did I mention it's free?

The first thing in biz is to make a profit by providing products and or services to the market place.

Cheap rent is one thing, making a go of it on a business scale is quite another!

I think Tara has decided on Cea Brieze or something nnot Tara Lea. And that's the beauty of starting out you can decide whatever you like no matter how many opinions Very Happy

But even so Steve I don't get your point about selling the business in this specific instance.....So it becomes succesful and Tara/Cea Briez decides at some future point to sell 'the business' but the business is actually her own art work, that she creates..how would that work?
Art Supplies, sure. Doesn't matter who owns it but originals and even licensed products will rely on Tara creating them. Realistically if there is no Tara (by whatever name), there is no business?

I agree with Amandav on that one

I was assuming it would be set up more as a studio for Tara to work in, in which case it'd be mostly her work on sale ...

kinda hard for an artist to "sell the business", what's she going to do - teach the new owner how to paint exactly like her and then let them change their name and learn hersigniature, then never paint again ?

on the art supplies side of things it'd work, but who wants to run a profitable enough art supply store when that would mean a hell of alot more "shop" time than painting time whne youre hiring a space as exposure/studio for your art

Ok just so everyone knows i never intend on selling the "business" - this is a space for me to work in that i will use as a shop front and sell a few little things to make enough money to use the space as a studio. As for what happens in the future...well thats anyone's guess. Many things can come out of this for sure, mostly i want a space i can work in. I have a few ideas and have set goals i am working towards. I am writting a business plan. I can do this, if i gain nothing from this really im not losing anything except maybe $70 a week, which to some is nothing, to me thats less money for art supplies...which is never good. To help with the cost of the "space" or studio i am using it as a shop to sell items that i am making such as my art and i also have teamed up with a business 15 mins from me that will be able to provide some services as well. I am getting a few other items like touristy type things made locally to sell in the "shop" this hopefully will help with my rent cost. As for the name i have decided on one that is best suited for me, i will let you know once it is actually mine lol - i will keep you all posted

I now have an ABN number yay! I am using my real name in the shop name. I am just going to have to deal with it huh! I am still waiting for my husband to build my sign, so just being patient for that to happen. I've been busy busy painting, i have five peices on the go right now. I have had loads of interest so far and for not being "officially" open i am very excited about that. I had one fellow yesterday ask me "I really like this one, how much" and it actually has a hole in it! lol I told him i have to get it fixed but will have prints very soon if he would like to come back when i am officially open, got his number Wink

I need to work out how much i can put on my paintings, how on earth do you figure this out? How do i know what price to sell them at?

I have had a lot of people asking about their photos on canvas, as i will be also offering this service i am excited about this too. All in all its been a very busy few weeks. Since they opened the bridge that connects the port with this town, there are so many tourists looking about, its great.

Chrissy - I am working on a website, a friend of mine does this for a living , but she had bad news recently and thats kinda put it off for a while. I hope to have my website up soon. Stressfull? No I am not finding it stressfull at all. I am finding i need to have better balancing skills, as I work night shift as well as have a young family, my 3yr old daughter joins me in the studio everyday. My husband is being really supportive and my friends have been great.

I guess I did decide to take this slow and I am fine with that. I will get pics for you all to see how my progress is going as soon as I can fit that in! lol I was asked about giving lessons the other day, which is something i hadn't even thought about hahaha. Im not offically open yet and wont be for a while. I am still getting my signs made, my husband is making those, he is very handy.

Being able to paint everyday and be more focused is proving productive. My paintings have improved dramaticly and I am seeing my style develope more. Its very exciting still and I am so glad i decided to do this.

Latest Update...

Im selling stickers and a few other things every week, not enought to cover my rent however. Im not sure if I mentioned before about an IGA going up across the road. Which should be good for all business here. The hair dresser has commissioned me to do some paintings for her new shop within the IGA, which will be great exposure for me, yay. My A frame sign is almost ready, but its too heavy so my husband has to put some wheels on it so i can actually move it out onto the foot path. My art supplies should arrive in the next week or so.

On another note - as i mentioned the hair dresser is moving into the IGA building across the road from where i am, which means her shop becomes avaliable for me. This shop is directly across from the bakery, and behind the real estate. Which is fantastic weekend exposure! However the rent would be more, so i am thinking now how i will afford this... perhaps showing others work on my walls. Renting the space on the wall sounds good to me but will artists go for it? What do you guys think?
Would you?
