Hi,
Just joined the forum today.
As I'm completing my studies at TAFE (Diploma Fine Arts) this year there are various options for further studies next year and would appreciate some advice.
I can articulate into 2nd year at SCA, enrol into NAS or do an Advanced Diploma at TAFE Meadowbank. My studio major will be painting.
What to do? Where to go? |

I suggest you start with asking what is it I want out of any further study.
many students don't ask any of these sorts of questions and don't (therefore) know what to expect...
try asking these.
Do you want...
Mentoring.
Support.
Technical advice.
Great facilities.
Great subject choices.
Critical review.
A push to create more.
A studio space to be left alone in.
A chance to network and explore the art world more....
Make your own list and ask great questions of all the places you could study at and see what happens from there. At Yr 12 level we went to a few open days... I had NO IDEA what to ask or even WHO to ask... It meant VERY little (at the time) who would be teaching me what, as I knew none of the names of the lecturers as I knew NONE of the names of ANY Contemporary Artists. (It would be different for me to study now though...) |

Hi Jen
I was asking the same question when I completed my Advanced Diploma at St George TAFE. I went to the end of year exhibitions at each institution and talked to the students. On both counts, NAS was the clear winner for me. They are probably the closest in style to the TAFE experience. I.E. emphasis on studio based learning with more contact time. There are big changes occurring there at the moment, so you should probably visit each place and make your own mind up.
One word of warning: First year is pretty intense at NAS, and takes you back through many basics that you might have covered at TAFE. They expect you to submit to the program and there isn't much accommodation for your particular interests. Its also very competitive to get into second year painting. But it gets better each year after that. The Art Theory/history component was miles ahead of TAFE.
Just curious, which TAFE are you studying at? Do you know Geoff Harvey? He was a great influence for me.
If your interest is in more contemporary practice, i.e. new media, then you might want to think about the other options. |
