Taken just outside the front door
Lights courtesy of a passing farmer and background lights the city of Traralgon about 20km away
Looking due south
Lots of tiny dust specks on the sensor so it needs a good clean before trying again but not too bad for a 1 hour exposure |

Mk 2
I just walked outside and this is a 10 second exposure.
Pretty amazing when you think this is a tiny section of the sky.
I am feeling pretty tiny at the moment
It's 6 degrees outside now so I don't think I will take any more tonight |

I miss seeing lots of stars in Melbourne. The increase of light pollution since I was a kid means that there are a lot less stars visible.
This pic reminds of a school trip we took to the Flinders Ranges - masses and masses of stars - just amazingly beautiful. |

| That's amazing Dug. You've even managed to pick up the different colours. Some are yellow, like our own sun, and some are white or blue. |

There is a way of capturing the different colours of stars in a photo
I will have to work on remembering how it goes
it is based on changing the aperture during the exposure so I am not sure if you can do it with modern cameras |

Nice. what lenses were you using? And what settings? Do you set it to a low ISO so it doesn't come out grainy?
We have great stars here, especially on cold winter nights - you can see the Milky Way really clearly. |

A 1 hour long exposure at f10 with a 17mm lens on a full frame DSLR equivalent to a 10mm lens on a "normal" DSLR. ISO was 400.
The main problem is battery power as you need to remember it takes another hour for the camera to process the image before you can switch it off
Apart from that a shutter release, a dark sky, no clouds and a good tripod and away you go ! |

No it is 200km to Melbourne and to the East of us.
Most of the light is from the Loy Yang power station and the city of Traralgon. |

I just bought a remote yesterday. But I don't have a 10mm lens for my normal DSLR. Lenses for the Nikon are just too expensive. May have to buy second hand wide angles and macros. At least Nikon's are backwards compatible so maybe I can afford an old one.
When I bought the remote I asked about a 2x ring and was astounded to find that it costs over $500! For a piece of metal with no lens in it! Outrageous! It's nearly half the price of a macro lens. Not worth it. |
