I have work represented in 4 galleries locally (in Victoria) and am about to have my first solo... so I couldnt really say how much I would be prepered to pay.
The galleries are selling my work for me, so I have no qualms paying the 25 - 33% commission they charge.
The solo in July, requires me to pay for the invitations, advertising and food/wine on opening night, which is up to me how much money I am willing to spend... a dilemma in itself.
I think it would be difficult in any situation you choose to go in.
I would be reluctant to pay for an exhibition with out knowing about sales records (which would be subjective on the style of art previously sold... a comparison of bird paintings compared with large impressionistic abstracts for example wouldnt work) and the galleries mailing list...
Back to the original question though, If I was confident the gallery would sell and represent my work well, I would be happy to pay... but how much is a really out there question. I dont know the average costs, and it would always be subjective to the bank balance at any given time.
People are prepared to pay alot of money to have work shown at Art Melbourne /Sidney, with no guarantees, but they do have the advertising covered and guaranteed crowds...
Big things to think about!!
By renting out your space and title ( reputation) you may also lose a bit of control over what is shown, which to the public represents you.
I am way to new to this to know exactly, but it is just a thought!
I think the classes and added items for sale would perhaps be a good way to go. |

Thanks Wendy I appreciate what you're saying but the way the Gallery is run would remain the same, in that I choose the artists and works that show in the Gallery, it would just be the costs that change. I think adding a few different services and products is the way to go too, I'll start these off within the month.
I would still do the invites and openings too and man the gallery as I want to maintain the standard and continue to build it's reputation. So far I've only had positive feedback on the space, art, local media and openings and I intend to keep it that way. I also intend to keep the Gallery in business, which prompted my original question.
I've received a very helpful pm from a forum artist which gives me the answers I was after and a starting point on which to base wall rents on, so onwards and upwards. I'll keeps you all informed on future shows and projects.
Thanks Jo. |

The usual commission percentage is between 33.3%-65%. So it is important to see what the gallery is offering for their share. Some high commissions are worth it and others not. The Bacon Gallery in Brisbane for example has a very high selling rate and as they exhibit artists with prices between $5.000 to $50.000 it is worth the commission, as they can offer a brilliant customer base.

Hi All,
Dumb question I guess, but a few of you have mentioned "vanity galleries". Can someone tell me what that is please?
thanks
