Hi,
Im an artist and hire models for my art usually from modelling websites or casual job ads but find most modelling websites while offering artist model as a category dont really get it and dont really promote that side of it. Art models are usually quite different to those who dont model for art - they are generally paid for their time but it is far less commercial in its enterprise and outcome. Art models usually do it because they are either artists themselves or at the very least creative spirits who like the idea of being paid for engaging with the artistic process and as such understand the desired outcome.
As an artist I can't speak highly enough of them and truly value their contribution to helping me make art. They are a very important partner in the creative process.
I got thinking - there needs to be an online register of artists models, as in an art model website. I have seen some that are partly that but not quite and they are usually out of date, or incomplete, and for some reason I don't get - usually pretty tacky looking.
There needs to be a website where models can upload a profile and artists can liase with them to organise art modelling work. This forum is a great tool for communicating ideas - it is well organised and logical - but there still needs to be a seperate site running along side this with a function that you cant deliver via forum. Profiles for art models that allow them to promote theselves and generate work and a tool for artists and drawing groups to use to hire art models for art sessions or art projects.
Im going to build a site for that purpose so if you are serious about getting art modelling work and are interested in having a profile on it PM me here on this site and we'll add you to it.
BTW - there is no cost to this, I'm not doing it for money - I'm doing it because I have a lot of experience in digital media and therefore can build it, because I have space on a server where it could sit so it isnt costing me anything anyway, because I love art and totally believe in it and think we have to be proactive in making it happen, and especially because I truly do have a huge debt to the creative souls who have modelled for me over the years and helped me 'do my thing' Like many of my fellow artists - I couldnt have done it without you.
This will only work if there are enough models to serve the purpose - so male or female anywhere in Australia or NZ if you want to get work modelling for art email me and well take it from there.
Cheers,
Deux

Not to go against what you're trying to do Deux ( I think its a great idea ) , but Ive had success searching online model sites ( namely Ozmodel ) and then sending an email to some of the models who list "artists model" as an acceptable type of work
On all occassions I explaned who I am , what I needed and got them to look at my site. response was always that they loved my work and would love to work with me
generally they won't charge their "normal" rate ( whatever that may be ) and let me ( / the artist ) give a better idea how it works in "our" world
alot of models on modelling sites have "TFP" - time for print , on their profiles , this could easily be changed to "time in exchange for portrait, digital of finished painting for promotional purposes, bragging rights that they get painted by famous artists , etc
Having said that, Ive got a mte who dresses like some new rock star ( you know , tight black jeans , oddly placed scarf, wierd hat that changes every day , stripey black and white socks way too high up for any decent gentleman ) and just walks around every few days asking people in the street, he always seems to get more "yes" than "no" , takes em home and whips out the polaroid and looks like he's making a pretty good career out of it .
Despite all that , I aggree - you are a champion . Make it & I'll sign up & use it every day . |

Hi Boris,
What you are saying is true and that has been my method too but the problem is that good as ozmodel etc are as a general modelling resource they aren't specifically targeted to the arts community and as such represent a passive resource rather than an active resource that is specifically arts focused and brings us all together.
I think this forum does a good thing in that regard because it is that, an arts forum, and the people who use it have a clear idea of what it is about - art.
Art modelling whether for individuals or life drawing groups isn't like other modelling work and I personally find that art models are also generally different to non art models, they are creative spirits and active collaborators on the project - so as an artist I would find a resource specifically for art models a useful resource and think that it would help those same wonderful creative spirits who model for art get work helping us put more art out there.
Im thinking also that as some people are unsure where to go or how to start art modelling it might provide them with a way in and a resource to come in contact with artists and art groups and other art models and achieve that.
Cheers,
D |

Hi Deux,
This is my first time on here. Very interesting to read other people's views on all different art topics.
How did you go with your website? I recently established a business called Muse Art Lounge in November last year and am in the process of having my website built. Please have a look (Its not quite finished yet).
www.museartlounge.com
I totally agree with many things you said about artists and models needing a link to each other. You will see that my business is a little different to the traditional life drawing classes, but there is a section for artists to find a model to draw.
Perhaps you might even like to come along to my next event in July. Its a great place for artists and models to get together and have a fun night out!
All the best,
Muse |
