I mainly use acrylics on paper so tend to use atelier with its range of mediums but also the Art Spectrum acrylic inks and occasionally a bit of Jo Sonja or AM thrown in for a contrasting look. _________________ Cheers,

I use Artlier artists quality too, mainly because that seems to be whats available at the Jacksons art shop near me. We don't really have much variety in art stores in perth!
Another artist said to me once that she always uses the best quality paints no matter what - even if its painting on a cheap board or el cheapo readymade canvas.
I have read a little on lightfastness etc and would like to be able to still look at my work in 10 years time and compare it to what I am doing then - without having to worry about colours fading etc... which apparently they are more likely to do with student paints.
Also there is a lot more pigment in artist quality paints so you dont always need as much of it. |

Im interested in opinions on the Matisse acrylics too as Ive just outlayed quite a bit kitting myself out with my first foray into the acrylic medium.
I bought some Goldens online & my local art shop only had Art Spectrum (which from use of their watercolour & gouache I wouldnt touch with a 10 foot pole) or the Matisse. So far they seem to be lovely paints & I cant say Im noticing any difference in quality to the Goldens.
Ive got a few Jo Sonja's & do notice a big difference there. The Burnt Sienna has very weak tinting strength indeed. Ive only a few colours & that is the one that strikes me as the weakest. |

| I always use Chroma's Atelier when I'm painting at home. It is not expensive, has lovely rich colour and dries with a faint sheen which really enhances any texture on the surface. At school I use Chromacryl (because that is what the school provides) I find the colour too translucent, especially the yellow, and it dries too flat. They are both made by Chroma, but the quality is worlds apart. |

| Since I have only just completed my first painting using acrylics and I used Atelier Artists quality (cause this was for my niece) I have to say I was absolutely thrilled with the results. However I did experiment with Global fine art student quality first and I found there was no comparison. Though I think the later product would be fine for someone who is just starting out in painting. - Someone who wants to paint but has no previous knowlege as to the different mediums but wants to try all of them at some stage. |

Hi Julie,
What medium do you use to thin the acrylics? I am just using water, but do find it thins out and becomes transparent, so am probably using more paint than I need to to keep the thickness.
I use Atelier, but also have a couple of tubes of Matisse which I find really good, anyone else used these? They are thocker than Atelier though.
Ta,

| Today I went down to the Art Shed and I grabbed a couple of the Mont Marte - Professional Quality tubes. I must say I'm really happy with them. I've been trying out a couple of things tonight and although they haven't completely dried yet - they seem to be better than what I've been using previously (which is Jo Sonyas). Jo Sonyas are quite affordable and come in a great range of colours, but I found they don't dry bright enough. |

I use Atelier most of the time and sometimes Matisse. I quite like them. It is the best I can afford at the moment.
I tried Mont Marte and didn't like them much. |

| I used to use Atelier, but they changed their formula some time ago. So I stocked up on the old stock whilst I could. Now I'm slowly introducing Matisse as I get close to running out. Seem pretty similar to Atelier - maybe with a slightly stronger pigment. |

| I have used Jo Sonja for a long time but, in the past year, I also tried Atelier Absolute Matte which was okay but I found the paint had separated in the tubes on some colours which I wasn't too happy about as they were new. I also tried the regular Atelier and then the Atelier Interactives. I wasn't keen on the regular Atelier but I did like the Interactives. That said, I am about to move over to Matisse Professional Artists range exclusively. |

I'm currently using the Matisse-Derivan acrylics for brush work, purely for the Flow formula range. For those who haven't encountered these, they are a low viscosity (ie: runny) paint intended for detailed brush work. Most art shops only stock the Structure range, which is intended more for larger brush, impasto and pallette knife work. So far, I'm in love with the paint, if I could only learn how to blend it smoothly!!
For airbrush work I swear by the Dr Martins Spectralite liquid acrylics.

Hi Grant,
The blending and overall open time problems kept me from using acrylics for a while, they just didn't mesh with my manner of working.
Not long ago I bought Atelier Interactive paints and it completely they've been great to work with. They don't go through a 'stringy' stage and it's easy to keep them open and workable for an extended period of time by misting them with water. I'm able to blend large areas with great subtlety and control and also go back in and make adjustments.
Atelier sells a pump spray for misting but I use my airbrush because of the greater control and coverage it provides.
