I've just moved to melbourne and am wondering if someone can suggest a good place to shop for supplies... some place that isn't too expensive or have good discount... i'm just very wary with money because of the move... still need to find a day job... anyway... i'm staying in Preston, so... very close to the city... any help would be great... thanks

There's Dean's Art in the City and South Melbourne, Eckersleys in Prahran. Down the budget end there's Riot Art in various locations - they are cheaper than the 'fine' arts suppliers but don't have as big a range.

Cheers

Why waste money buy online at www.smartartclub.com.au I think this is the cheapest place in Australia check their prices and see. they will even get things in for you they don't normally have and still at the cheapest price in Australia Very Happy

PS. just make sure of the delivery cost before you settle the purchase

Unfortunately I can't answer that question because I've never bought any there, I think this is the problem with on line stores you real have to know what you are buying before you order ,, I go to my local art store and work out the exact item ( name & number etc) I want before I order from Smart Art.
On second thought I do think I looked at them once And thought they where a bit thin,,,But I 've just bought a roll of Fredrix Polyflax canvas and I don't think it is any thicker it seems all polyester canvas is thin.

Is that polyflax one the one that is supposed to have a longer life than linen?

Yes jade that's the one 100% polyester it is supposed to out last the best Linen not that I will live long enough to find out anyway . I could only find two makes of it in Melbourne , Fredrix Red Lion (520) polyflax and Claessen polyester blend ,, both are primed but rather thin, though you do seem to be able to stretch them as tight as a drum..but as I've just started to use it so I'm not sure of my verdict ,good or bad that is Very Happy

West Art Supplies in Buckley Street, Footscray is reasonably priced, with helpful staff.
There is an Arthouse Direct store in Buckley Street, Essendon, but it's a bit more expensive.
Also a Dean's Art in Sydney Road, Brunswick

Im newish to Melbourne too and after a couple of things.
Where can I find large sheets of paper? Vary quality, but mostly for large sketches - for practising and working on something better. I know you can buy single sheets, but I am hoping there is a cheaper option and better selection than I have come across at the few places Ive been.
Also where can I get good paper and have a good variety of choices for paper to be woodblock or screen printed onto?

And that is my next question - who supplies silkscreens and paint? I think I saw a beginners kit at Deans Art on Geraldine, but is there anything else available?

Hi all - SERIOUSLY - the new Arthouse Direct in Swan Street Richmond is awesome! As far as a shop goes - clean, all the brands, and just a great feel!

The best part their online store is the absolute cheapest online - they charge $9.90 for freight BUT I made that up with two W&N paints - Everything was delivered the next day express post and a few other goodies!

I saved about 20% over any other online AU Art Supply store - SERIOUSLY! check them out #######
