Hi All,
I thought I would give puppy portraiture a go... A little ambitious - maybe should have started with only one dog but I’m quite enjoying the experience.
I think the snout is a little off side, but I think a few minor adjustments should do the trick. |

These portraits are coming along well. The snout looks ok from this angle.
To get the relationship of the eyes and the nose correct, I draw an imaginary triangle connecting the three and compare it to the painting. Once the eyes and nose are in the right place everything else seems to follow easily. Looking forward to seeing the finished painting. |

Thanks Clive,
I will definitely try the triangle approach - anything to make it easier and look right of course. |

| These are coming along great, I like the use of the long board, or will you separate them once finished? I also like the background colour, and look forwad to seeing the finished piece. |

question for all dog painters (from a novice painter)
I have noticed that you develop a lot of detail around the eyes before filling in the rest of the face. Why?
In portraits of people I have seen most work migrating from general to the detail.
Any comments? |

In my case it's because the eyes are the focal point of the painting. The expression in the eyes relates to that particular dog and is different to any other dog, even one of the same breed. Because it is so critical I like to paint them first, in enough detail that I know I have captured the dogs personality. I don't want to paint the whole thing only to get the eyes wrong at the end. It's much easier (for me) to get them right at the beginning.

I only draw and do not paint, but I agree totally with Clive.
I have tried drawing from one corner right to the other side and it turned out fine but I prefer to draw the eyes first.
Also for me the eyse and nose tend to take the most time and require the most focus (except in my current portrait cause his hair is all over the place ;p) so getting them done is a bit of a mile stone |

Michael, This is a Work in Progress, this is definately not a finished product I have only just started to block in some colour and some idea of the dogs - a starting point you might say - that might be why some of the dogs looked washed out, I still have a LOAD of work to do on this one |

I was drawn to the eys first, for me its the same - I felt if i got them right the rest would fall into place. |

Thanks Jade,
It will stay as one long board as the dogs are a part of the one family.I had a lot of touble deciding on the layout.. and how to do the background.
The colour of the background is one of the two colours they have just repainted their home with. |

With regard to painting animals eyes, I painted 14 of these for the Old English Sheepdog Club. Apart from the puppies, they all had their eyes covered and were strangely unsatisfying to paint.

| So Clive, how did you manage with each individual dog’s personality without their eyes? Especially doing 14 of them... |
