question for all dog painters (from a novice painter)

I have noticed that you develop a lot of detail around the eyes before filling in the rest of the face. Why?

In portraits of people I have seen most work migrating from general to the detail.

Any comments?

I agree with Clive also,
I do the eyes first as this gives the character of the animal & picture, if the eyes are right the rest falls into place much easier.
I also then can hold a conversation with the animal as I proceed & they tell me if I got the rest of them correct or not. Wink
The only people portraits I have done where graphite, & I worked the same with them, I did the eyes first. it's what works for me.

So Clive, how did you manage with each individual dog’s personality without their eyes? Especially doing 14 of them...

I didn't get to meet any of the dogs, they were done from supplied photos, so I didn't have much of a clue about their personalities. Maybe that's why they were'nt as satisfying to paint. At least this one had his mouth open, some of them were just fairy floss with a nose. "Ohh, that's just like him!" said one owner.

Thanks for the feedback on this - it gives me a better understanding of the process.

Does anyyone apply this to painting people?

Mind you, there is the risk there that the eyes would look at you and and criticise the work whereas animals just take anything and accept it.

I am looking forward to the finished painting

A little more completed, I’m quite enjoying what I’m learning. I went to an Art exhibition on Saturday to meet Brett Jarrett - who also recently had an article in Australian Artist Mag (March) - Very nice guy and extremely talented and down to earth. I had the opportunity to ask him quite a lot of questions about his technique and learnt so much. I have been trying to put a little of it into practice.

Anyway here it is.. Its still a little wet that's why she is a little speckled
Would love some feedback Smile

A little more detail. I should be more patient and wait to take the pic when the paints are dry... Still more to do Smile Would love some feedback.

OK I'll say it then. "It's finished"
Very nicely too.
Have you just completed that dog or have you finished them all?

Thanks Clive,

Nah just that one, I think one of my learning goals is to paint faster - it takes me so long to do one painting - i think it will come down to experience, im trying new things every day.

Hi all,

My confidence is growing and I think I'm starting to loosen up a little, the hair is not as scary as once thought and I’m starting to think less is more... in some instances. Here is the next instalment, Miss Wendy (unfinished and still wet.. Wink )
Feedback welcome.

Great job so far! I particularly like the effect you have gotten for Miss Wendy's ears, I think it looks nice and realistic.

Certainly looks like a big project =] can't wait to see it all done

Thanks Kristy,

The nose still bothers me a little but it will have to stay as is now, hopefully the highlights will work their magic for me when it counts.

I have 3 weeks to finish it, so cutting it pretty fine and also trying to get another 4 major works finished. I have my first exhibition on the 3rd of August at Norah Head on the Central Coast. There has been a lot of late nights or should I say early mornings (2:30am)
I think the time frame has helped me loosen up a little and helping me to achieve my goal of learning to paint faster hehehe Laughing
