I got this catalogue from a favorite gallery this morning.
The problem I have is the reproduction of the works of some pretty famous artists for resale as his own work.
This has to be a breach of copyright laws, just wondering what you think.
And yes I know I am probably breaching copyright by republishing the work ! |

I think it's a RIP OFF probably had to appropriate other peoples masterpieces to hide his own lack of talent,,,
There is a small chance that he might have paid some license fee to use the images in that way ( though I doubt it), but whatever it's still a RIP OFF |

I really cannot see the estates of any of these artists selling the rights for a work like this.
Is copyright 50 or 75 years after the death of the creator of the work ? |

Aside from the copyright issue I just think it's a terribly boring and contrived idea - lillies overlaid on very famous prints very twee.
Clearly the 'artist' is relygin too heavily on the work of Adams et al. What a pity, when there are so many genuinely talented and interesting artists a gallery finds room for someone like this.
Copyright I am pretty sure is 70 years after death |

BLAAAAAA BLAAAGGGHHH!! I think they are pretty bad Doug.
I hope no one lurking the forum did them, and I agree with all comments so far. They are not even 'kitch' enough to be in anyway bad enough to be good... the only shock is that a gallery has an interest in them at all.
About the copyright issue, they are different enough to the original images to be unique in their own right. The artist is not attempting to sell an item the same as it was originally created, so in this way it is not a copyright issue, if they were individually trademarked it might be a different issue though.
I feel it is a moral issue though. It is crap, and pretentious to rely on a recognisable image to sell something with so little thought or meaning put into it.
I dont even like the peace lillies they have used, they look like they are artificial , photographed and stuck on... just yuck. |

I think the musical equivalent would be sampling... it can work creatively (eg Utah Saints "Something Good") but most of the time somebody without any talent or inspiration takes the good bit from somebody else's work and does talking karaoke over the rest, and then calls themself an artist. (or MC or DJ).
You may have detected the subtle dislike I have for Hip-Hop...
On the copyright issue, I would like to think that a jury would find that he (A) has reproduced a significant part of the prior work and (B) has not changed it enough to qualify as a new work.
Cheers

I think this counts as a review... that's a 'fair use' get-out-of-jail-free.

You silily bunch of phililystines. How dare you vililyfy my work?
Anselily Adams has personalily written to me to say he deeplily regrets omitting these highlily significant blooms from his portfolilyo. Marililyn Monroe and Lily Marlene Dietrich have also expressed their gratitude for revitalilyzing their lilykenesses.
These are not tame lilies, they are wild lilies of the field and training them to respond to commands like "High lily" and "Lie lo" was not easilily facililytated. Plus digitalily converting fililym images for printing is realily hard work, so I totalily deserve the prices I am asking.
My work is about World Peace dammit, and you cormless, lily-livered lilliputians have just set the cause back about a mililyenium. |

Reminds me of a quote.....
"Your work is both original and good. Unfortunately the good parts are not original and the original parts are not good."
I think this was from writer Samuel Johnson |

I agree with what everyone has said above. Great quote Amanda - says it all! You are right, it was Samule Johnson - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Johnson
Dug - I think you are probably not breaching copyright by posting them there since you are copying less than ten percent of a publication for private non profit purposes. The gallery and/or 'artist' could perhaps sue you for defamation though? |

I think the comments so far have been about the work, and come under the free speech / fair comment category. Nobody has said the 'artist' is a talentless jerk with the creative ability of a cucumber, which might be considered defamatory (and would be against Forum guidelines).

| I wonder who would buy them. They look like something you'd see in a $2 shop. |
