Actually I know what it is now. A friend pointed out that the lines line up perfectly with the fence, especially the third one, where you can see the shadow on the camera side of it, and when you look on the right of the picture you can see the headlight trail and the white line reflected also at the same angle. It's a reflection - a very slow lens flare effect. I need to use a lens hood perhaps. |

another benefit of film over digital |
Dug - I talked to my friendly local camera store guy about this and he said that it's a sensor problem that has really only been fixed adequately in the D90 and later. The D80 is apparently notorious for it. It is exacerbated by using either very low or very high ISO settings. The photos where it occurred were taken at low ISO - 100 or 25. Apparently the 'native' ISO of the NIKON range is 200 (It is 100 for Canon). Anything lower than that tends to do strange things on long exposures. That also explains why it only occurred sometimes - the times it didn't was when I had it set to 200 or 400. Interesting. As you say, there are still some things film does better. No random red pixels on film either, which is the other symptom of this long exposure problem. |
