These night shots are really awesome, I'm amazed at how sharp every picture is!

Thanks Dug. I finally bought a remote control yesterday, so will be keen to experiment with some longer exposures and star trails like yours when I get time.

DUG - what causes the purple light at the top corners in some of these? It's like light is leaking in somehow. Or is it a (very slow) lens flare? Do I need to use a hood on it?

And the centre of town isn't much less dead on a Monday night:

Interesting Smile You have a totally different eye for things to me.

Seeing how others look at a scene always fascinates me.

Try taking a good torch or spotlight with you to paint light over subjects like the gravestones. It is also interesting to walk through the photo with a torch or flash and play with light.

Too bloody cold to be out at night anyway !!!! Shocked

It was above zero, not very cold. Probably about 5 or 6.

I only did it because the local ABC was asking for pics of the shortest night.

Good suggestions. I have done some with multiple exposures of me before. I was parked in a lane next to the old part of the cemetery and I couldn't be bothered getting over the fence to walk around (and then discovered the gate when I was leaving, doh!). I also forgot to take the flashlight with me, and it needs a new battery anyway, but I tried to set up where the occasional car headlights would hit the trees in the background at least.

Unlike some, I can only afford one DSLR! Wink
It's my NIKON D40X.
It only seems to be with the 18-55mm lens but that could be coincidence as I didn't use the 55-200 much last night.
There were also these strange lines that only became visible after equalizing the image in photoshop:

What could cause that? Something wrong with the sensor array? Or possibly electromagnetic interference? No it's not an electric fence.

It was a 139 second exposure at f/7.1, 18/27mm focal length, ISO 100. The noise filter was not turned on. Actually, as I said in my PM, I now suspect it was just something on the lens. It doesn't appear in other shots since.
