Hi there - I've been wanting to paint in acrylics for the longest time and finally bought some stuff to dabble with. I still have a 101 questions so please forgive me if they sound stupid...
A bit of background - I draw a lot - nothing spectacular but wanted to try painting. I heard acrylics are good for beginner painters - would you suggest doing a few classes would be beneficial or is it ok to get straight into it? I live in NE suburbs of Melbourne (~ Rosanna/Heidelberg) - is there any good classes around the area anyone knows of?
I also bought some student grade acryclics today (actually it's a starter pack of the Atelier Interactives), some canvas panels, a few synthetic and bristle brushes, some slow medium and a plastic palette. Is there anything else anyone can suggest that I'd need to get started?
Any advice for beginners to acrylics or painting in general would be really helpful....
Thanks in advance |

Acrylics dry darker than you mix them.
Start off painting simple objects
Have fun, experiment and learn by your mistakes.
Persevere and keep on painting. |

Local community houses often have beginner classes, I dont know what is in your area... If this isnt an option, Australian artist magazine, Artists Palette, and Fine art and decorative painting, all have good tips and projects for beginner artists.
Fine art and decorative painting this month are three for the price of one... and is available at the newsagents.
This is how I started painting , I learnt a few tips from reading, then stuck with it.
At the start, things may not turn out as you expected , but keep going anyway. It takes time to learn the 'feel' of paint and brushes.
Good luck! |

Thanks heaps for the suggestions - I have heaps of books I have borrowed from my local library and they have some really good insight as well...
I'll have a look for the those magazines too...
I guess I'm just a bit nervous to actually put the paint on the canvas that I'm doing all this research to make sure I do it 'right' the first time lol.
I think I'll just play around with the paint, maybe go to a few lessons and see how it turns out |
