Hi everyone, a couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to travel around the apple isle for four days, covering 1200 kms and taking almost as many photos along the way. I also did some studies while we were there and have completed 2 studio works since our return.
Here are the studies. All are plein air pastels on Rustygrit board, 9" x 5"
Dawn at Binalong bay
Distant showers - Pyengana
Snow on the peaks - Cradle Mountain
Evening light -Strahan
Cascade stream
This little piece was done during a one on one art class I ran in Hobart for one of my online students. He found the experience was a real eye opener!
Each of these was a great deal of fun to do and I wish I had the time to do many more while I was there. In preparation for the trip I'd modified a small painting box into a storage box/ drawing board which attached to my old camera easel. Unfortunately the easel had a hard life and decided to die just after my Pyengana piece.
Returning to my studio I decided to tackle the Pyengana scene first and worked it up on a full sheet of Rustygrit paper. Working from a combination of the study for lighting and tone plus a reference photo for details this is what I came up with
Approaching storm - Pyengana
While I was working on that scene I began developing a small panorama of the awe inspiring Cradle Mountain. This was done on a Rustygrit board, 7" x 16"
Light over Dove Lake
I'll be starting more works based upon the trip soon. Thanks for looking! |
