This scam has nothing to do with your art. It is all about the reimbursement!
Aparantly this form of scam has been around for a while, and there are many different names the people use. Check the list I provided.
They usually use a free email, such as gmail, yahoo, or hotmail. What they do is, they get your trust and come across like genuine people, email back and forth etc. Then, you send the art, and they "deposit" their cc payment into your account. Trouble is, the cc is usally stolen OS. They play the trick with the freight part. They usually deposit way too much into your account, and then they ask you to reimburse the difference back to the " freight company" they have enlisted to pick up the art. No hurry, they prey on you being a trust worthy person.Obviously the freight company is a bogus company name and it goes straight to the crooks.
They have about 3 weeks to finish the transaction, before it is picked up on the credit card statement of the real account holder ( the one they stole it from ) By that time, you have 'reimbursed" the difference to them, and you are screwed, because the sham transaction will not go through into your account.
Very very clever little deviates. Heaps of people get caught.
They also have other versions with money orders and cheques, but it always involves you paying them back the difference in the mistake they have made when they deposited your payment.
As soon as i see ' freight by me", and an email like the one I received, I know it is a scam. |

I was reading an article in a back issue of Scientific American last week (yes, I am a nerd..) in which a group of researchers attempted to find ways to help people spot internet fraud. They came up with a 'training' game that flashed a message at you when you had been conned. They idea was to train people to:
Never give their passwords to anybody, even if they say they're from your bank.
Check to see if a site is actually secure before entering details, even if it claims to be.
Look at the URL to see if the site is actually the one you think you clicked on.
The bottom line was that most people do not understand what the information in their web browser means. Strangely enough, the number of users who fell for the 'scams' was a lot higher amoung Internet Explorer users than Firefox userss...

Thanks for the warnings.
I had something similar a couple of years ago when I first put a piece of art for sale on the internet.
I got an email, written rather funny, & saying they would buy my painting, but that a friend oversea's owed them about $10,000 & they would get them to send it to me, & I could deduct my couple a hundred & forward the rest on to them. could they trust me with their money.
I just thought, if they think I'm that stupid they must have rocks in their head, I mean, if someone owed me that sort of money, then I would want it payed to me.
it's good to get some info on current scams, thanks. |

That is a good scam they have stolen credit cards and use you to launder the money they steal from them When the police find who took the payment out from the card it is your account they get the numbers for and you have a forwarding address of a PO box in Nigeria or somewhere.
I like the MAKE $100,000 FROM HOME signs you see stuck up on lamp posts they are similar scams where they use you to launder money electronically stolen from banks or credit cards and pass the money on to them.
The only way to make that work is create a false identity and not bother to send anyone anything before skipping the country |

Dont even give these guys your bank details or deposit their cheques.
A company Im associated with sold some paintings to one of these guys then realised it was a scam. BUT the Aussi dollar had risen so much over about 2 weeks that they lost $3000 on conversion fees when the back reversed the deposit. Ouch.. |

Because i sell computers etc on auction sites i get all type of scams.
The paypal ones are the best when they send an 'email' from paypal which the email address is wrong plus the image for the paypal logo is from a different website like a high school in the US.
got to love it lol

Or this one, which I followed through by trying to contact the supposed government agency involved. It definitely was a scam.
Córdoba, Argentine.
Dear artist Pee Van Sprang
Once informed about the characteristics of your work, we will consider your possible inclusion in the book named “ La Estética y el Arte Contemporáneo II”, being the book of huge format, art-gallery quality with full colour images and texts in English and Spanish. The selection was based upon quality and origin as in previous publications: “Arte Iberoamericano Contemporáneo" (Contemporary Latin-American Art), www.atcultura.com.ar and “Arte Contemporáneo Imágen y crítica“ (Contemporary Art Image and Review).
We are sponsored by the Government formally but receives no money, that is the reason why this venture is supported through sponsors only, thus asks artists for a reasonable economic contribution.
If you are interested in being part of this book, we need an immediate response via e-mail to director@atcultura.com.ar or atcultura@argentina.com so as to include you in the listing of chosen artists. Visit www.atcultura.com.ar and
http://www.550m.com/usuarios/Ram/arte/Actividades%20culturales/arteiberoamericano.html in order to see the launch of the previous book.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Lic. María Miriam Farías Iriarte.
Secretary.
