Well its not really contemporary because it has been around for centuries, but it isn't oils either.

I have just done a Encaustic painting class at Uni...
1. Crush chalk pastel for pigment

2. Melt beewaxs

3. add pigment to wax

4. do painting (etched into at end to define detail)
5. end result: Boat by the Bridge

It is an interesting technique. Hard to achieve smoothness, great for texture and building up layers. Have to work really quickly. Hard to get detail. Fun. Dangerous.

That looks really good, I have looked at books on this from time to time & thought it looked interesting, perhaps one day I might have a go.
Nice work. Very Happy

Hi There!!
That looks fun!!
I have been curious about encaustic painting for a while, I never knew what it was, I had been envisioning some sort of art making that involved caustic soda Embarassed or draino....
And... today I was just browsing about and found an interesting sort of page that may be of some interest to you.

It turns out that i have been doing something similar in principle , but using the medium to sculpt (via drip and brush) onto various surfaces ( candles are the most fun so far) but i used oil pastel to colour the wax.
i think i will give it another go!!

Thanks for posting the pics, it has been great!!
