OK, so I wasn't sure which category to put this under. This piece is solely colour pencil. Two brands - Derwent Artists and Prismacolour Premiere, both being totally different but useful. It took me forever, well it felt like it, about (I guess) 70+ hours. The Prismacolours are rich and waxy, great for the colour, the Derwents are much harder and lack the vibrancy but are great for detail and blending. The support is an off white mat board, size 29 x 40cm
Detail...

Bravo.
I tried autumn leaves in watercolour, and it had nothing like the vibrancy of that work.

If it took you 70+ hours, it would take me an eternity.

| Very beautiful. I am happy to see the name pencil painting applied. (I usually have personal gripes that a drawing is a drawing and why demote it -the drawing process-by calling it a painting ...I know.. an old argument but then I think everything is a drawing...I am a bit nutty when it comes to that idea). The reason why I can accept the aspect of it being a pencil painting is that the application of the dry medium here is wonderfuly done. It reminds me of the point of Brack's early works in his exhibition http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/johnbrack/ One being a self portrait honouring the technique of Seraut. While Brack's work was a monotone in graphite it heralded his future fascination with tonality and self restraint. Seurat believed that a painter could use color to create harmony and emotion in art Ok I cheated and am copying a quote from Wiki thus here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georges-Pierre_Seurat So I think you are on a winner and I hope to see more. cheers Janine |

Marvelous, it is difficult to believe that the sketches are drawn with color pencils..
No one can ignore the artist's indepth knowledge of colors |

Emily, Pearl, Stefan, Belle, Tango, Wendy, Kim and Grant (whew) thank you all so very much. It is framed now and as usual looks so much smaller than when I was working on it, but am still happy. J9 thanks to you too....I guess I call it a painting because 'drawing' just doesn't seem to fit. I know...you draw with pencils and paint with paint, but, but...it just doesn't seem right here. If there were outlines, if it were more sketchy and the entire support not covered, maybe then a drawing. Anyhow, I like the idea of 'pencil painting' |

| Thanks Rachelle. The technique for 'capturing the light' is much the same as glazing in painting. The really light areas are left blank, with the colour of the mat board exposed, in this case, off white. Starting with the lighter colours I layer colour upon colour. In this picture it was nearly entirely covered with different yellows to start which has given it the 'glow' I wanted. On the yellows I layered the greens, oranges and reds, slowly, section by section developing the piece. I guess, as a rule, whatever colour you want to shine through is the colour you lay down first. |
