C'mon tell us more, like why we should join, the benefits of joining etc... I'm not about to run off to some website and signup for another bunch of networking with euro artists or similar that are of nil value etc... Nor am I about to run off and chat with just decorative artists, (hey they have their place BUT!) If I am connected to an art site I want to have a mix of folks, I note many of these sorts of sites seem to have just one or the other.

In this instance my definition of decorative artist is a work produced to decorate only, not a work to provoke comment, communicate at a deeper level or explore concepts which may have different or deeper cultural value other than decoration. Hey I'm all for people having something on their walls, but why just decorate when you can do more, have more, be more.

Smile

I'm not sure what's wrong with them Wendy, they have skill and produce work pleasing to the eye and usually have a far better business sense than 'non-decorative' artists. Perhaps their place is to make the 'non-decoratives' feel good and to help hold up their pedestal. But true I'd like to know what a decorative artist is, possibly if you can't write a thesis about your work that is one.

I believe all artists are to some extent decorative. People, are after all, putting works in their houses. I am amazed how the arts fraternity continues to want to categorise things in order to present a specific kind of art as being superior. Divide et impera?
It doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks for your comments Jade and Stefan... You have mirrored in your comments what i was thinking!
It still has me baffled a bit the term Decorative artist, as like Stefan said... If they are hanging...then they are decoration, if art is 'doing' something, ie, fulfilling a purpose, then i thought this was a craft??! The line is a little blurred...
The term 'folk artist' has a different meaning all together...
Hmmm....more thoughts to think!!

Hello everybody,

I have read the discussion right now and I am really amused about how artists talk about each other. Decorating or not. Roy Lichtenstein could be interpreted as "just decoration". Pollock as "no idea what to paint, so I paint it my way" - I am not ehre to judge, I LOVE this controversal views. Thats what art makes to art.

And Steve, if there would not be "decorative" art as you define it, you would not have been able to discuss about it.

Art is controversal - and so iss the taste what "art" defines. Anyway, this was not the usual intention of the topic and in my eyes "GLOBAL" is a clear definition of MORE THAN EUROPE Wink

GLARN will not be a "Lions Club" of artists where only the sophisticated and well known artists has their platform. That`s boring. There are enough clubs, forums, xings where a bunch of amazing artists tell themselves over and over again how wonderful they are.
Everyone who concider him/herself as artist is welcome. The argumentation and position of " I dont want to be on a page where hobby-pseudo-decorative artists are" is not constructive.

With kind regards,
Axl

GLARN is a concept.

First step is the social network / community at glarn.net

Too many services and every performer, dancer, musician or painter is with a different one? Know why?
Too many Facebooks, Bebos and XINGs! And none of them offers the services a real artist like you really wants in an online platform!

At GLARN, you can upload virtually everything that defines you as an artist; your biography, your photos, videos, songs or books.
And everyone else can look for any piece of that material he wants to know about.
So, in time, GLARN will become the biggest and most comprehensive database for artists of all kinds!

I agree, but what does the term outsider mean to you?
Calling yourself and others "Outsiders" and then saying what you said in the quote above seems contradictory...aren't you catagorising yourself?
And if you are, then why?

You are right, I shouldn't use the term, but I am forced by factors out of my control. Iwrote somewhere how I ended up having to carry the cross with this name on it.
But there is another thing that makes me use this term. The rejection by "insiders" who do not want to be associated with me because they are trained. So, as I always said, I define as outsider anyone who wishes to be part of a festival that celebrates the freedom to create. It is open to all artists, trained or not and it is about the freedom of creating art. Vansprang said it so well on another thread.

This just tells me that you have a certain amount of insecurity.

If you feel that you need to be accepted by anyone then you are bound to feel let down at some stage.

Whatever! Fact is the Adelaide Outsiders Festival opens on the 1st November at 1 PM at the West Torrens Auditorium and features so far 40 artists and more than 90 works.
Secure, insecure, in these times, who gives toss?
