I just got some of the new Atelier Interactive Acrylics, more info on them is here:

http://www.chromaonline.com/interactive/about-1.htm

I've started to experiment with them and will post more in a few days. So far they look promising as they're much easier to blend than normal acrylics. The paint doesn't form a skin and get stringy as it dries.

The colour chart is here:

www.chromaonline.com/interactive/colourchart.pdf

I wasn't able to find an on line pigment list but Brad at artgear.com.au sent me one which I've scanned and OCR'd which you might find illuminating and useful. Unfortunately I can't see how to attach it to the message so PM me with your email and I'll send it to you if you want a copy.

What makes them 'interactive' is it just a cute buzzword or is there something extra?

I like the idea of no skin - I hate skin!

That sounds like gouache. Acrylic can not be re worked once dry and that is what I actually like about that particular medium.

The fact gouache can be reworked is the benifit of that medium.
But I wonder if these new paints would be a more cost effective substitute for gouache!

Unlike gouache which is opaque, the transparency of these paints is dependant on the pigment just as in other acrylics. Also thick layers can be used for impasto effects without cracking as goauche does. The surface dries to a nice satin sheen, not dead flat like a gouache or plastic shiny like typical acrylics.

The 'fixing medium' enables one to have a layer that is not reworkable if desired. I'm experimenting with other ways to achieve that until the fixing medium is available in OZ. I like the ability to work in layers, 'fixing' them at a certain stage, and applying a layer over that can then be reworked without disturbing the underlying layer.

One nice thing about them that I've noticed is that there appears to be relatively little colour shift when drying. I haven't worked with artist's quality gouache so I don't know what their drying colour shift is like.

ETA:

Just did some quick experiments and as one would expect a coat of an acrylic medium over the paint does make it resistant to scrubbing off.

There was a small but readily noticable colour shift with the Atelier Binding medium, a much smaller shift with the Atelier Watercolour medium, practically none with the Atelier Satin medium, and none with Liquitex matte medium.

There are some new Interactive specific mediums to enable one to take full advantage of the new paint's properties. One is a 'fixer' which will make the surface more permanent so it doesn't lift and there's an 'unlocking' medium which makes the paint workable again after it has dried. See here:

Try this link if that one wont work.

Unfortunately Chroma in all their (lack of) wisdom and misguided marketing hasn't made the mediums available in OZ as of yet and there's no set date for their release here. Until then (whenever that is) you'll have to order the mediums from the US in order to take full advantage of all the benefits of the Interactive paints. I've emailed them expressing my displeasure with this 'neglect the home base' marketing strategy

I used a product called flotrol which does the same thing (slows up the drying time of acrylic paint.
I used this in house paint for control over paint effects. A very handy product and used a lot by proffessional decorators like the chap who painted the exhibition buildings.
It is available at Bunnings and most likely other Hardware stores.
This may be a good fill in until you are able to get the medium above.
I wouldnt be surprised if it is the same product ingredients.

Hi

I went to a presentation about Atelier Interactive Acrylics at a local art shop this week and was quite impressed.

You can find out more about them at www.chromaonline.com/interactive

Now that my ban has processed the tax man's cheque (Were they checking up on him or me?) I am thinking of buying some more acrylics.

What would be a good basic kit, particularly for someone into portraiture?

hmm, they sound really interesting, I might be tempted to give them a try.. I have played with acrylics but disliked the fast drying time, color shift and the lack of layering.. these sound like they may be just the thing to let me try acrylics again. I don't like the idea of a media thats eluded me.. it makes me cranky!

I have desided to wait until that medium is available as I dont like the idea of them being watersoluable which will restrict them to being framed under glass. Crying or Very sad

I contacted Lawrence Denham from Chroma and he said

Quote; The integrity of the paint film is no different to the 'old' Atelier.
The paint film can be rehydrated for a period of time depending
on the humidity level [ approx 30 mins]. Then it cures and will
not take up more moisture. It does not need to be protected under glass.

Well that is different then. Time to splash some cash. Laughing
