Sigh, I really do hate parting with money but Margo insisted she wanted a compact camera so I went to see a friend at Camera House and bought her a little Lumix DMC-FT1 the new waterproof one.
She was pleased and I was given a really good price on a new Nikon D700.
I have been wanting one of these for sometime now but have balked at the cost around $4500.
About midnight last night I wondered what the US price was and looked at the B&H camera store there was a dealer demo D700 second hand for $2,000US that worked out to roughly half the price of a new one here !
I also managed to find a 28 70 f2.8 lens and an 8 gig card for it and it came out to just under $3,000 for the whole deal.
It should arrive early next week, I am ever so slightly excited |

I'm waiting for the D3X to dop in price, or the Goverment to up it's fiscal stimulus to $12,000
Just out of curiousity Dug, why not something like the D90 (which is what I'm considering).
Cheers

the D700 has a full frame sensor and incredible high ISO capability.
It produces usable images at 6,400 ISO I have never had anything that was capable of that kind of sensitivity before.
With film 1,600 for colour and 3,200 for B&W was about the limit.
D90 is a really nice camera but for me it would be the D300 or the D700.
the D700 I got was cheaper than a new D300 in Australia!!!!! |

This comparison chart is just insane the quality of all the cameras is unbelievable but it does show the difference in the sensors. not that a real human eye could ever really tell in the real world !!!

How are all of those ISOs going?
We need to see some superb shots to prove that you invested your money wisely

I am still counting to make sure all the megapixels are there
then I will get to count the ISOs
The KLF shots are taken on the D700 and the table top photos. |

Dug (and anyone else)
You are a man of some considerable skill in pics and relatively recently acquired a Nikon D700. I know that you are busy moving so input appreciated (also sent as a PM)
I am looking at upgrading from my Nikon D70 and was hoping for some advice if you have a moment (any other people welcome to comment too):
1. Doug - why Nikon over Canon (I have used Nikons for 40 years and they are indestructable) is it like a Holden / Ford choice or are there real differences?
2. I notice some of the Canons have 18+ megapixel capability vs the 12.7mp on the Nikons in similar price range - are they comparing like with like?
3. I saw your note on the low light D700 vs D300 - is it therefore worth the extra $1000, or would I be better putting the extra $1000 into a second lens? therefore goin 18mm-100mm and 80mm to say 300mm?
Someone on the weekend said that they had heard negative stuff about the D700, but did not know / or would not explain further!
I realise that some of these questions are a bit like asking the length of a piece of string, and my use will be at the hobby / low end professional side, but could you give some guidance.
Yes, a D3 is a nice dream, but the extra $10,000 is way over the top
Regards Michael
PS - send it as a PM if you are concerned that a comment may cause legal issues |

...and lots of annoying Nikon double button features I bet. That's the only thing I don't like about them - you have to remember which two buttons to push to get function X,Y,Z.
Hence having to...

That would be my method!
When you say full frame sensor, you mean like the equivalent of an old postcard film camera or something? (4"x5"). Is the sensor array removable, or just built into the camera? I have always wanted a removable sensor array that I could stick on the back of my old ca 1910 postcard camera, but they are about $15,000.
And why are Nikon lenses and accessories so expensive, btw?? Even a 2x ring is over $500. |

The sensor is 24 x 36mm the same dimension as 35mm film
the sensor is very built in you need to go to a medium format for a removable sensor and they are expensive and have their own problems. Nice but not for the common market just yet |

You CRUEL man
I looked at a Diana that someone showed me on the weekend - all $60 which I think included the flash
I will be lending her a real film camera to see the difference - it costs as much for her to get really crappy shots (boy developing films is expensive in Brissie) as it would for her to get some pics using a proper camera ($30 for a 12 shot B&W on 2" x 3", plus a contact strip) - I nearly cried.
A dose of vaseline on the Nikon lens would get it down to about the same quality.

I have a Diana myself and would love to be able to afford to use it
Vaseline on a good lens does not give the same effect as the plastic lens does, it is a strange look that is difficult to replicate.
I would like one of those Diana lenses just for fun |
