I'm planning a long weekend in Tassie during August - surprise for my husband's 50th Smile Have had a look through the brochures and internet at places to go, but I'd really like to hear from others who either live there or have been there. We will have all day Sat, Sun and Mon there, hope that's long enough to get around Confused We both love history and would want to see as much of the historical towns and surrounding country that we can fit in, I will also want to visit galleries and my husband will want to get a surf in. At this stage I'm thinking we will head to Hobart and surrounds first day and back up to stay at Launceston 2nd night.

Would appreciate any recommendations re towns to visit, galleries, and where we can find the best surf Smile

You can find a guide to Tasmania here:
http://www.australiantravelguide.com.au/tas/

One tip, you dont need to pay to see the Penguins! I can't remember the official spot where you pay for tours, but there is a nearby tourist area with board walks to view the ocean and the rock formations there, the pengiuns burrow all over that hill, including under the baord walk it self.

I would also recommend seeing cradle mountain, you can do the first leg of the walk get soem nice views photograph the mountain, but if you are adventurous, do the 'overland track' about 80km hike, takes 4 to 7 days to do, and is AMAZINGLY beautiful! (can be dangerous in winter though)

Also Port Arthur IS very interesting. Almost everyone who goes to TAS sees it.

And Mount Wellington, really nice views over Hobart. You can drive yourself up to the top.

OH, and the cadbury chocolate factory tour is great too.

August will be cold, especially at night.

Have fun!
Brad.

Hi Sunday,

Itenerary will all depend on how you are travelling. A couple of days is pretty tight if you want to see things and drive from one end to the other.
West Coast is pretty wild and about the only place I know of for a decent surf - at Bells Beach. This is a bit of a drive through to Hobart though.

Cradle Mountain by all reports is stunning, but again you will probably not have enough time if you also want to see much of Hobart.

I have mostly stayed pretty close to Hobart on my travels there.....

For historical - Richmond about an hour out of Hobart. Port Arthur again, about an hour away - but in a different direction. Richmond is quite an old town, and pretty, while Port Arthur is downright spooky - you can really sense that it was once a prison for convicts. And take a stroll around Battery Point it is in Hobart, walking distance from town.

Tas Art Galleries - Bett Gallery and Criterion both in Hobart (look up your trusty Art Almanac for the addresses).

Also on Saturday's Salamanca Market at Salamanca Place on the waterfront. Some galleries and cafes there too - open all week.

When you are on the docks, ifyou have time check out the hotel which was converted from the old IXL cannery -across the road form the Art School. It is touted as an Art Hotel - lots of piccies on walls all over the place. Very pricey for staying in though. (Sorry can't remember the name but it is easy to find.)

Of course the Cadbury factory tour. About a twenty minute drive from Hobart - though you can get a bus tour. Tickets sold on the docks (near Salamanca place).

That should well and truly fill a long weekend.
Very Happy

Lovey hubby is a Taswegian - but he has been here for about 20 years.
He went to Art School in Hobart and helped set up an artist collective - studios and exhibition space called Chameleon (no longer in operation but lasted over 10 years). Some of the artists invloved - David Keeling, Helen Wright, Raymond Arnold all show at Dick Bett's Gallery http://www.bettgallery.com.au/

Needless to say I get down there every once in a while.......

Take your hubby to Knopwoods Retreat in salamanca place for a pint of his (and your) pleasure. They have an open fire so nice to warm up. I never miss a chance for a guiness and a warm up by the fire...... http://members.ozemail.com.au/~peacockpub/knopwood.htm

To eat out - anywhere in Battery Point is good Shipwrights Arms is great but you will need to book ahead...... http://www.batterypoint.net/shippies/

Oh and the seafood chowder at Doyles - on the waterfront

If you want a night out with live music The Republic Bar in North Hobart is the go. A bit rowdy so only if you are in the mood....well rowdy for Tassie Laughing

Absolutely. Just make sure no snow or bad weather are ahead - the weathre on Mount Wellington is quite different to in town (even though it is so close) and many tourists have got caught underprepred. When you get dressed, assume it is at least 6 degrees colder on the Mount - you can always peel off layers if the weather is mild.

It's also windy - we nearly got blown off once!
