Sunday, I'm wondering if your son has opened Painter and had a look around yet. It isn't necessary to wait for the tablet before plunging in. The mouse doesn't have the sensitivity to tilt, pressure and speed of the pen so the more painterly brushes won't show their full potential. However there are lots of other brushes and tools for a mouse to play with. I'd recommend he just mess around and get a feel for how things work. Start a new document, any size. Make some marks, try out the various tools and effects. Also fool with photos. Serious pictures can come later.
