Hey Steve good on you, thanks.
Your book is quite handsome. Adding in quotes is quite a nice touch.
Can I ask why you chose to go with photographs rather than paintings? |

Great question, I have done these shots recently and have been so focussed on my paintings the photo side needed a boost (my thought process).
I am waiting for the sparky to fit some lights to the "studio" so I can photo the paintings better in there. I have a thought for an upcoming show where I combine the two elements (photo and painting) by having photos that go with the theme I want to explore... and diametrically opposed to the paintings (they are abstractish).
I have always loved text and photo's it can add depth. I bought years ago a book on Marcel Proust's writings with Eugene Atgets Photo's it was a big glossy deal and I loved it, always wanted to do the same. Now I have (well on a small scale).
can you tell I have been eating chocolate this morning... he he... |

BRILLIANT! Just picked up my book and Amanda's from the Post office just now WOW! they look GREAT...
I was worried the photo's might be a little light in mine, but they are GREAT!
I am SO IMPRESSED with the quality!
Simply fantastic!
I now want to do a Hazel and send them to people who buy my Art... do I order a big box or should I get just one more... Gotta have a laugh occasionally!
What's that you're still not sure if it's a good thing to do Wake up Australia! |

Steve so glad you were happy with the quality of them both. It's quite nice to hold in your hands a copy of a book of your own work, isn't it?
I see what you are saying about photos and paintings. If you work across disciplines I guess you will sometimes need to focus more on one than the other.
Good luck with your book....maybe in time you'll want to do a book of all the artists you interview (or at least those who give permission).
And if you buy bulk, you get a small discount and only pay for shipping once. Then you can distribute signed copies (for sale through your site) or sent as gifts to your special buyers. |

It would be nice to do a book like that... I have thought about it a bit, but, a bit busy at the mo... perhaps a volunteer might jump out and say Hey! I can do that! then I might think about it a bit more deeply... |

Yeah I was thinking more down the track. An anniversary perhaps. |

hey, i found this thread on google and was wondering if you could help.
Im also from Melbourne, and Im looking to print a book, or more of a portfolio. I was intially thinking about using blurb as well because of the quality and price, but as i need it urgently, i can't wait for shipping times.
Im thinking about local print shops, and thought you might have researched around and know general prices compared to blurb.
Would you happen to know roughly cost of printing? it shouldn't be too much compared to blurb?
I've tried looking online, but most websites seem to be for mass copy printing or prices that go up to AUD$150. If this is a general price, how come blurb is so cheap. |

I don't know any local copy shops who offer the same service for a comparable price (perfect binding's the killer.) I don't know how they do it for the price - although I'm going to PakPrint tomorrow and it's always possible that the new Xerox/Kodak/Iris/Scitex 9900 does 48pp perfect bound one-offs in 30 seconds and there just aren't any in Australia yet...
Plan B for a folio would be to have it printed as standard A4 or A3 CLC's on heavyweight stock (140-200gsm) then comb or wiro bound with a 300gsm or clear cover. Note that you can only bind A3's an the short edge as all the short run binding gear is set up for A4.
Plan C would be the same except put them into a display folder from Officeworks (about $1.95 for A4). I have an A3 version of this and most people seem to be impressed with it's "professionalism'. Are you intending to mail/hand them out or have one master copy to show people?
Cheers

There's heap sof Australian places that do the same thing. Not sure of the print timing of it all but you can give them a try.
At one stage Target had the same service.
You downloaded the software. Similar to blur's I have been told. Design your photo book. Then order it online.
You could also go into Target and check out a sample of the book quality. Not sure if they still do this now days. Check out Targets website: http://www.target.com.au/photobooks/products.htm
There's also heaps of photo printing websites out there now who also offer a similar service.
http://www.photomax.com.au/
http://www.photoexpress.com.au/
http://www.snapfish.com.au/
I just Googled photobooks.
So I have no idea if there any good... |

Thanks for the advice.
dont understand the mumbo jumbo '48pp perfect bound' as i never made a book.
Plan B is what i had in mind, printing out standard a4 and wire binding - i prefer wire binding as it lays the book flat.
I have looked around the cbd and prices are generally $1 - $1.60 for a4 colour 100 - 169gsm. i guess that is decent.
i too wonder how blurb prices are so cheap, and quality looks great judging by the photos - like 200gsm. but then adding the shipping cost would equal the cost of a local wire bind book.
maybe i'd make a blurb version later on as well. |

As a follow up to this, I spent 2 of the most frustrating hours of my life in a camera store doing battle with the HP photobook software. It would probably be perfect if you just wanted to turn a whole pile of photos into some kind of album, and didn't really care what it looked like.. but with 5 cards off 3 cameras edited in Photoshop then copied to DVD it was a nightmare...
On the other hand, I had another look at Blurb. I note that they now accept PDF's made to their specifications. (they even supply InDesign Tempates for bleed, trim and spine size). So I've laid out my chosen Tasmania pix exactly how I want them as a coffee-table book. (Including double page spreads for the panoramas).
They arrived last week, and I have to say the quality is stunning. I've gone the expensive option, with premium paper, large landscape size (318 x 270H) and image wrap cover, but that still only works out at $100 for an 80pp book.
Well worth looking at - thanks Amanda.
Cheers
