I love the variety of avenues one has these days to publish and publicise work.
Recently I have created a short run calendar (on redbubble which I think everyone here is familiar with) And I have been playing around with blurb. If you don't know about blurb it is a great site where you can create all manner of self-published books - there are art books, wedding albums, travel books, family holiday albums, cookbooks...you name it.
The books are professionally produced and give people the opportunity to create extremely small runs as the books are printed to order. Once you publish your book you only need ot order one copy within the first 15 days for it to stay in the bookshop. (Lulu is another similar site).
I put together a small booklet a while ago for some PR I was doing prior to my last show but now that I have completed my most recent series (I think) I decided to create a public book of my most recent works (you can create a 'private' book that is only available to you and people who you invite in).
My new book "Amanda van Gils: Views from a Speeding Train" is 38 pages long and features 34 paintings representing the entire Views from a Speeding Train series, included exhibited work and unexhibited studies. The book also contains an Artist's Statement, a CV of exhibiting history and is available in softcover or hardcover.
You can see a preview at http://www.blurb.com/user/Amandav?profile_preview=true Unfortunately the preview only lets people see the frst 15 pages (there is a page of 12 studies toward the back that I think looks pretty good so it's not all one page/one image as the preview might suggest).
Mainly I have made it for myself (PR stuff) so I'm not expecting much in the way of sales but it wil be interesting to see whether the blurb bookstore finds me any new buyers.
If you want to have a go at making a book, browse the bookstores or find out more you'll find blurb at http://www.blurb.com and lulu at http://www.lulu.com/ |

That looks really good Amanda, congrats on a lovely looking book, I didn't know you could do that, but it's a great idea, isn't it.

Thanks Pearl and Jasmine. Yeah it is amazing what you can do from your home PC these days isn't it.
Jasmine I've already ordered a few. I actually made it for myself for a project I have in mind and then thought I may as well make it public and see what people think. |

Thanks
and Steve, you might be interested to know that you can pull blog content into book form using blurb.
So aside from publishing your own art work there might be some potenial for you to put all that hard work on Art Re-Source into book form ...if there was ever a need / desire. |

Thanks Stefan..I figured since it had already been mentioned I should put a post up. Plus I imagine it would be something others may want to consider at some stage.
To be honest I can't really remember why I chose blurb over lulu. I signed up for both many months ago and had a play on both.... probably I just got a bit further along with the version of the book I was making on blurb. I think pricing and options were all very similar. |

Not of this version yet, still waiting on those copies. But I did a smaller private version late last year so I have seen quality. Reproductions come up really well and overall quality is good, certainly comprarable to exhibition catalogues and other books.
My galleries have a copy and were really impressed with it. The good thing too is that you can create one, order a proof copy (it takes a while to arrive though) before you order any more or make it public so you can, for a minimal outlay, check that the quality is as you want it. |

Or......you could order one for yourself and find out first hand
Seriously the ones I have received so far are excellent quality, glossy cover (softcover), nice paper, strong clear typeface. The only difference in this version is that it has extra pages and paintings added. |

I know I can order one for myself to check, but unfortunately I am not that rich to risk getting something of a poor quality - that's why I have appealed to your kindness, since you have already ordered a few.
Thank you. |

Stefan just to let you know I have received my copies and am very happy with the quality and overall look. I have had feedback from a couple of buyers about what a good looking book it is and have also had a few gallery insiders respond very positively to the book - both the work and to the actual book itself. |
