Hi all - I have recently started working on a kid's picture book for a publisher client of mine. I've laid out or worked on several, but this will be the first one I've illustrated in my own right. This is the first spread, and is to establish style for the remainder. The MS is still be revised, but in this section a toy robot has become lost and finds himself in one of the less desirable sections of town.

I'm trying REALLY hard to avoid looking like Toy Story, Wall-e, Number 5 or the drones from Silent Running...

Cheers

Grant

It looks great Grant! The robot does remind me of wall-e though (although I haven't seen the movie)! Is that a character in the book?

Thanks jasmine, and all... The robot is the main character, although what he (?) is and what happens to him is still being worked out. In the MS, he has tracks (one of which has been lost at this point in the story) so I'm trying to avoid looking like any of the other tracked robots around.

Cheers

i really like the way the dumpsters have been rendered authentic but without being too realistic.

Hi Grant,

not a criticism, just an observation: the Robot looks like he is heading to the 'more' desirable sections of town, and away from the 'less'.

Maybe have the town in muted tones, like Shaun Tan's book cover 'The Lost thing' http://www.shauntan.net/books.html,
with a brick wall across the scene, and add some grafitti; make more of your smashed windows.

Great illustration though. Good luck with the book.
Jay.

Thanks Jay - in the final scan, the whole all on the left has been darkened considerably to hold the text better.

BTW, the Lost Thing is being made into a movie. Shaun does fabulous work - in fact I asked him who did his scanning, so we're using the same people (Hell Colour - Hi, Filomena...)

Cheers

Another spread from the world's slowest moving book (actually this is #4, so I'm not quite that bad.). Since October last year I've had a bit of disruption on the job side of things, so painting has unfortunately gone on the back burner. Time I got back into it.

I still need to add some highlights (possibly by May) and don't like the mist across the buildings, so I'll fix that in Photoshop when the hi-res scans are done.

Cheers

I love it Grant, although the grey buildings take away from the picture and the sea gull.... maybe if they were darker? I'm not sure, but it is a nice picture anyway!

Looking brilliant Grant! Congrats on everything that's been going on lately too!
I'd probably suggest a glaze over the wind of the seagull to add more depth but apart form that this is looking wonderful!

Thanks, Leigh. Wendy, I'll probably take the buildings down a bit in the final scan so they recede a bit more.

12 to go...

Cheers
