Hello everyone, I haven't been on for some time as I've been moving interstate, however gotmyself settled in Coffs Harbour now and loving it. What I want to know is, can anyone tell me where to get YUPO paper here in Australia? I've looked on the 'net but it keeps taking me to an automobile site, must be the name of a Japanese car as well!

I got some at Art Shed. Is Art Shed Aust wide? I would have thought any big art supplies would have it. It is used for stencil cutting a lot.

Its strange stuff to paint on Tango. But you can wash it clean if you don't like the result. I used one piece 15 times.

Paint certainly does not bond with yuppo paper like it does with real paper. It is a plastic, waterproof film. There are lots of people using it... mostly with watercolours. I think it has to be sealed once the paint is dry but even then I think you are right..... it may not have longevity. You would have to put it behind glass I think.

Yes I think I will give the Yupo a big miss......I just read the bit where the artist tried to dry the watercolour with a hair dryer, but the heat buckled the sheet of Yupo permanently....so it's No No Yupo

I thought I might try Yupo but I found this:
Suitable for offset, UV screen, flexography, gravure and letterpress processes
http://japan.yupo.com/english/printinfo/ink.html
So it's for commercial printing applications and even needs specific inks so it's not suitable for art purposes.
http://japan.yupo.com/english/printinfo/index.html
The latest Australian artist magazine has a water colour painting demo using Yupo...so I reckon their article may be misleading as the paint will never key in to the substrate because of it's water and chemical resistance.
Am I missing something?
Cheers

No I don't think you are missing something. I think the lack of any bond is the elephant in the room with paint on yuppo. That is, lots of people trying it, lots of demos avaliable, but the subject of longevity isn't discussed. It is still interesting stuff to play around with. I reckon it could be pretty permananet if sealed properly but if not sealed you can scratch paint off with your fingernail or peel a film of acrylic right off it, clean.

Just attended a Gum Bichromate Workshop at Gold Street Studios in Victoria a couple of weeks ago (Oct 2011), and we used Yupo (besides Bergger COT320). It worked quite well with Gum. Generally we use dry pigments rather than from the tube. Coating was a bit more fiddly than COT320. Yes, not very permanent but an interesting paper nonetheless. The benefit is not having to size the paper, which you normally need to do with Gum. And no shrinkage, so registration of multi-color prints is not an issue.
Dalton in Australia was already mentioned - primarily for the Sign, Screen and Display market. Quantity may be an issue. May have to buy lots. Dalton has technical info for download.
Try yupousa.com. They appear to sell online. |
