Just finished this one ( I think). It's working title is "Does your mother know?".
660 x 465mm on 600gsm Arches medium.

Great subject. Well painted.
Can't help thinking that you could acheive a huge 3D effect if the clouds were airbrushed. |

| Very nice - wish I could have it - as I am slow and my English not that flash, why that title? |

Good point - I've never had much luck airbrushing clouds. Have you ever tried doing it in watercolour? - if so, how did you mask the edges to keep them soft? I read somewhere that using cotton wool was the go -tried it but it blew straight off the paper, so I weighed it down with some typographer's leading but that left marks where the pigment blew under the wool and fetched up against the weight...
Stefan - the title is deliberately ambiguous - there are a few urban legends about hanging shoes so I wanted something vague. The rest of it is probably "...that you've lost your brand new sneakers?"

I would probably paint them freehand in gouache or opaque ink...but then it wouldn't be a watercolour painting any more...it would be a nice effect though.
Here's something to try. I thought of this technique when I was in my" Patrick woodroffe is a god phase...I used to draw the main subject in polychromos pencils on hot press bainbridge board, no background at all. Then after sprayng it with fixative I would mask it with liquid latex.
Then I would spray a background colour or colours with polymer based automotive paints (two pack basecoat-or the type of paint used under two pack clear on cars).
Once that was dry I would marble over the top with artists oil paints thinned with pure gum turps suspended on top of cellulose wallpaper paste. The oil paints would adhere really well to the matt finish of the polymer paint.
When the oil paint was dry I would peel off the latex masking to reveal a drawing which had such an amazing 3D effect that the viewer thought that they were having a flashback.
I would enhance the marbling with a small brush and usually had to rework some of the drawing and it's edges, but what great fun...try it at home.
It's a bummer that I never took any photos of any peices I did that way. |

| Hi Grant, ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, I think everyone as a kid could relate to this scene, looking up at the street powerlines and seeing someone's hanging shoes. I love the ladies heel touch. |

Thanks Chrissy - I put the high heels in because.... dunno. It just seemed to need them.
Pook - the clouds are wet-in-wet, and I'm (obviously) still getting the hang of it. Airbrushing them is an attractive idea because I would have more control. I prefer painting in ways that build up gradually, rather than the sudden-death approach. As you may have gathered, I'm not very good at the traditional watercolour approach.
Cheers

Hi Daniel - this should appeal to your sense of humour.
I've decided I'm really not happy with the clouds, so thought I'd try it again with airbrush. Did a Google search for "Airbrush Clouds Watercolor" and got.... this thread.
This post has probably just increased its ranking again...
Cheers

So, are you saying you didn't have a pair back in the 80's??? (that's probably a good thing though)
They were around about the same time as the grey plastic leather zip up dress shoes & big hair!!!
Adidas Romes were in - K26's were NOT!!! Purchased a your local K-mart store I think.
I can't believe you haven't heard of them - you poor thing

Yes, I've led a deprived childhood (for nearly 50 years...)
I think if I did have a pair, I'd throw them over a power line too, rather than give them to the Salvo's... the poor have already suffered enough.
I'd never really seen this a a symbolic protest against crass 80's materialism and class stratification, but what else do you do with them now George Bush is gone?
Cheers
