Hurray! Another Apo-addict is born.
Steve, I started a thread here a while back, The Way of Apophysis. Om was curious about Apo but he decided to concentrate on another program, Ultra Fractal, for the time being and I let it lapse. I can revive it if you're keen. |

Wow! Looks good!
To me it looks like there's an angel at the bottom of the screem hugging a baby!
maybe I need to get out more... hehe |

Me too Steve!
This is what I came up with. I love the circles and spirals. I'm trying to figure out how to make the circles look like spheres.
Thank you Velvet. |

You're welcome Clive.
To make an existing flame into a sphere, try this - it works on some flames, but not all.
1. In the Editor window, click the FX button- it's at the right-hand end of the top menu bar. This creates a new, white triangle called a Final Transform.
2. In the Variations tab, set the Linear variation to 0 and Bubble variation to 1.
Moving the Final Transform triangle will rotate the sphere. But it's not a complete sphere as it's derived from a 2D flame, so it has no back. |

Thank you Velvet, and Happy New Year.
I got up this morning and read your post and was so excited I was going to make all these spheres. I think you must have a different version to me though, there isn't an FX button in my editor menu.
I just have the basic version. Are you running the Beta one?
I am having so much fun with this program, but I'm going to have to get back to work and paint some dogs soon. |

OK.
I've just downloaded .08 beta 2 version.
Now to make some spheres! |

Yes I am using the current beta Clive, didn't think to mention it, sorry.
You'll find it much, much better than the 2.02 version. I keep it in the same program folder as 2.02 and launch it via a desktop shortcut.
So .... Happy New Apo!
Here's something useful I found last night. The Help file in Apophysis hasn't been updated since 2.02 and even then it was pretty meagre. But now a kind and clever user has written a bigger, better Help for the current beta, you can download it here: http://cmptrwhz.deviantart.com/art/Apophysis-Help-File-v1-02-105243195
Paste it into your Apophysis program folder and say yes when the prompt asks if you want to overwrite the existing file of the same name.
I imagine it won't be long before it's included in the program but for now it's worth having for those "What's this button for?" answers. Coulda saved myself a lot of information-gathering last year if I'd had this. Mind you, I still have some catching up to do - I have no idea how to use the new Xaos tool yet. |

Steve, I am amazed how fabulous some of the images are, and stunned at how much work velvet obviously puts in to transform them into her own works of art.
It's utterly addictive. |

They are amazing, I love fractals, I've been playing around with "Tierazon " for the last year.
I use mine for my screensaver. |

So we can come to a few conclusions here and please, note I bear no disrespect for fractal artists in what I am about to say, BUT I am always posing questions to get people to think and explore (my lot in life)
Note the descriptors from the replies above... Amazing - Fabulous - Stunning - Addictive - Excited - WOW.
Now apart from some fluke shots people might get with Photography I challenge anyone to show me a visual creation device which can get these sorts of comments as feedback in such a short time... New to drawing, people might say "Oh a great start, with practice you might do some great things it all takes time..." and so on. The new drawer might be going "AAAARGH" inside thinking they will never get it... Yet with this program a few flips of the mouse and HELLO! that looks good? what if I???? hmmm Voila!
I know there is more to it than that BUT the basics are there.
So how is it art...
- Because I have added the element of a "creative eye" and tweaked it a bit, altered the camera angle and voom there it is.
- Did I start out with the intent to make the work look like this? In my case no.. Although I have paintings similar in style to these.
- Is there a concept behind this I can attribute to these, Oh sure I can dream up a few but like the previous question the intent was not there to begin with.
- I could argue a person who is disinterested in art could flip the controls, and create works of value to sell a maths person or an engineer. AAARRGH! and lets face it the images can be stunningly beautiful. and would sell but the value of the work at the higher end is whats of interest to me... Hmm limited maybe?
I love it but I have the above thoughts running through my head.
If one of my wife's Yr 11 Art Students had done some of this work it would have been interesting to see what she would have said.... As it could be easy to have a theme of work running through and show a progression, a "skilled" operator could have whipped up a years worth of folio work in a short time frame. |

Steve, I've been "playing" with this program for hours now and no way can the images I produced be called "art". Most of them are randomly created. Velvet, on the other hand seems to use the program as a tool to create the effects she wants. She said in another post somewhere that she effectively starts with a "blank" page, and creates an image from there. She then obviously uses a whole lot of other techniques to end up with images like "space junk". It would take me forever to learn how to do that, just as it took me forever to learn my drawing skills.
I agree that it seems easy to produce an interesting image, but that is not the end of the story. |
