Hi all - for once I remembered to take a shot before the painting got too far down the track - this one is a couple of sheds I spotted outside Daylesford.

Still have a few boards to go, and haven't put the dark interiors in yet, which will either make or break it. The shiny bits in the foregound are masking fluid, as I haven't started the grass yet either. Not happy with the background - it didn't go anything like what I had in mind, so I've glazed over it - at the moment there's nothing to take attention away from it, so I'll see how it looks when everything else goes in, or I may have to do it all over again...

Cheers

Grant

wish i could do waters like that. looks good so far. perhaps the background will look okay just as is if there is enough in the foreground to take your eye - all is not lost yet on tthat score i would think.

Hi all - stage 2.

Haven't had much time to work on it, so it hasn't moved very far. I've filled in some of the solid black areas - normally I would do this towards the end, but I had to fill in time one day when I could be interrupted at any tome, and this was the logical bit to go on with. At least it helps me judge whether the colour in the planks is strong enough.

Cheers

Grant

And is it?

I like the composition. It may change as you finish it of course, but at the moment it takes your eye in a satisfying loop from the apex of the shed two thirds in from the left at the top, down to the dark interior of the shed peeping thorugh the boards, across to the wood piled up against the second shed (or whatever it is - a fallen fence perhaps?), then up to the apexes of the second and third sheds.

Finally finished it... I think. Which means I don't know what to do to it next, which is usually a sign to stop...

Hi gggraph.

This is a very beautiful painting! I really like how the black bits give the feeling of cold empty air. The pale aged wood looks so lifelike - reminds me of our old barn on the farm that is in a similar state! The rust stains are awesome too. I find it very hard to capture any kind of metal surface, you did this really well.

In my humble opinion, I think the background could of perhaps had a slightly warmer colour at the very bottom of it (just a touch) to give it that depth of distance...but I am not so good a painter so it's just my observations.

Hi Jade - you may well be right.... I hate the background - it didn't go anything like the way I wanted. Your idea of warming it up is a good one - I'll dummy it in photoshop, and if it looks better, I'll try it for real.

So far, every alteration I've made to the background has made it look worse!

Cheers

Grant
