Hi Everyone,

A new website under construction:
http://www.artdictionary.com.au

This website is new and will grow overtime, with images and better explanations. It aism to be a resource to Students at a high school level, as well as Art Students, and Artists too.

It's been alot of work just to get the information to this point ...hopefully more artists will want to contribute we will be able to make it flourish and be a great resource to educate and encourage others with their art making. Smile

Kind Regards,
Brad Buchel

Good to see copyright in there brad but could you add the links that apply to art and photography such as copyright.org.au?
This education is lacking and would be good to have on this site.

Hi,
It's good to be back. Yes, an art dictionary will be very handy indeed. in fact I might have already visited it in my search for the defintion of 'allegory', comments everyone?

Yes a lot of paintings are said to be allegorical, in its most basic form it means it's a picture with a story explaining ideas , morals etc, but it also could be a painting in which people or things have a symbolic or hidden meaning.

Thanks Tango. Could a painting be allegorical but not necessarily have obvious symbols( the skulls in the vanitas genre). If so, could any work of art allegorize wether or not it is intended so by the artist, by giving it an 'allegorical' title?

That's an interesting question, I guess if the artist gave the painting what seemed to be an allegorical title even if the canvas was blank, it would be assumed by the viewer that some allegory is intended or even if the blank canvas had no title the viewer might find some allegory in it when trying to understand its blankness.
I would like to know what started you on the exploration of this question.

It is actually a study/research i'm making at university. I'm going to do a presentation on the subject on week 7. There's only so much you can get from dictionaries. A guy Iian Neils fron art history forum group explained and actually defined allegory in a succinct way. According to him, allegory is actually a rigid genre of art and those who claim or fixed a title on any painting that does not represent a subjective concept such love, hope, justice is not allegory but a symbolist painting. It was a very interesting point of view.

That sounds like a reasonable point of view. but it is interesting how us humans have to tie everything down categorize and put it in its right box.
Best of luck with your research.

Laughing well yes, you could say that. As a student teacher, It's useful to know some certainties no matter how tenous they might be, more so in the visual arts when 'everything goes'. I can imagine two worlds coexisting where in one, the possibilities in all manner of self expression are infinite and limitless while the other is fully charted and could be used as solid ground to leap off from, back into abyss of the first. does it make sense?

Two worlds sounds perfect to me , then I can retreat to either one as the mood takes me.
