The finalists are in
Any predictions?
I'm Liking a few. Not sure if they'll be able to go past Vincent Fantauzzo, it's very powerful given the timing. |

I think Ian Smith by Jun Chen is a stand out, can't wait to see it on the wall
I also think the painting of Dr Joseph Brown is brilliant.
and it's great to see Alexander McKenzie in there again |

You mean you didn't enter this one Simon??
Interesting that the judges chose two such similar compositions in Danelle Bergstrom's doublet of Peter Sculthorpe and Phillip Barnes' one of Red Simons. Eolo Potaro's and Rodney Pople's are interesting too, but are they really portraits? I can't even see what Leslie Rice's is, it is so dark. Has anyone seen it IRL to know?
I think Ben Quilty's self-portrait is a very clever use of paint - that would probably be my favourite. And I like Robert Hannaford's of Alison Mitchell. But not many of them really grab me to be honest. They're all competent, even exceptional portraits, but nothing stands out to me like some of the past finalists. Anyone else feel that way?
As to guessing a winner, I agree with you Simon that "Heath" would have to be a sentimental favourite wouldn't it? What's the bet it gets the people's choice? |

| Leslie Rice won the Moran last year with a portrait that depicted his head on a platter, painted on velvet and very dark and hard to photograph. It looks like this entry is similar, but a few extra body parts. I had been told he was doing Adam Cullen, had no idea he was getting that treatment though, definitely have to see it in real life. And I really like Jun Chen and Zhong Chen + quite a few others. |

A good mix this year. The winner is ? I would of said Sam Leach if i only had the names to go by and no pic.But i expected better from him so no to sam. Vincent Fantauzzo work is chilling and you get that chill up the back of the neck. But is it from the subject or the painting?will be up there but no.One day we will get a good pic of one of Leslie Rice paintings to see them better.need to see it in real life.No.
Roger Boreham what the!!! NO. The winner is Del Kathryn Barton it stands out from the other works,it's well painted as most of her works and like Sam Leach,Leslie Rice and Ben Quilty she is one of the flavour of the month artist. |

Cool! It looks much more impressive in that vidclip than the small photo on the archiblad site. |

I really like 'Heath'. I wonder about the timing though...?
It looks a bit like Shawn Barber could have painted it... |

Hey all,
It looks to be a strong exhibition this year.
I'm thinking that the favourite is likely to be Ben Quilty's self portrait. Agreed?
There are a bunch of dark horses though! |

| I'm going for Del Kathryn Barton or Eolo Bottaro, but seeing that all things Chinese are in the ascendancy , Son Ling and Jun Chen have a good chance. |
