I copied this painting from a painter who I don't remember his name anymore. Tell me what you think. C&C welcome.

Maybe I should do my own still life... but, copying other paintings seems like good practice for me, I get to see the brush strokes and the way that the painter painted the painting. Hopefully these techniques that I've learned from other painters I will be able to use later on. I'll practice a bit more I think before I start on my own paintings. Thanks Ocker

Copying the masters was (probably still is) a well respected way of learning to paint.

Personally, I hate it - in our art group, the leader often brings in photocopies of drawings as subjects. I finally realised what the problem with that approach is: most art is about leaving stuff out (except me - I put everything in because I'm not very good at it..), but if you're basing your work on somebody else's, all those decisions have already been made. So your options are either to copy it exactly or #### it up. It's impossible to improve on it.

Cheers

Grant

As long as you acknowledge it is a copy, this is a good way to learn colour mixing and application. It seems to me that you are doing this very well and you are more than ready to launch into some original work.
I look forward to seeing these on art forum.

Absolutely it's a legitimate way to learn different approaches and techniques. But it's impossible to do a C&C on a copy unless you are asking for comment on how closely you managed to execute the copy and you put both images up. For example I could say that the grapes look a little too much like pearls rather than succulent fruit..but maybe that's how the original was.

So the only C&C I can offer is to say that your paint handling looks both competent and confident enough to be applied to original works.

Thanks Belle, Gggraph and Amandav. I will post the original if I can find it, so you can make a good critic, and yes, maybe its time I started on my own original work. I will post these as soon as I can too.
