Is there one side smoother than the other on Arches water colour paper? I can't seem to tell which side has more tooth. The water mark in the corner is on both sides so that's no indicator.
I had a disaster today with a sheet of Arches paper. It's the medium 356gsm cold pressed 4 deckle edged sheet. As I was using pastel, the paper developed or already had an area of very little tooth. It happens occasionally and I can't see why.
I know that over working pastel can fill the tooth up like pencil work can get a waxy bloom.
I tried to save it but made it worse. So in the bin and a new sheet is now on the board.
Any ideas? |

| Chuck it in a bath of water and wash it as clean as you can. Tape it down until dry and use it again. |

Ok didn't think of that. Will give it a go.
Even if I can salvage it for another project. Thanks. |

| Or you could use pastel paper instead of water colour paper. I'm not that experienced with pastels myself, but I can see the advantage of using paper dedicated to the task at hand. Or, you could prime your paper with a bit of gesso to increase the tooth. I'll just hop back in my box now... |

Ha! Love it when people jump out of the box! lol
I usually do sponge over the paper with pastel primer and it gives a lot of grip. Unfortunately it wears off the tips of your fingers if you do large areas of finger blending and I do with skies.
This time I wanted it smoother to draw in finer details. I've started with a new sheet of paper and it's not giving me any grief yet but I am being watchful.
cheers

Hmm, I never thought of that happening before, although it is kind of obvious now that you've mentioned it. I'll have to remember that for down the track (I'm sure I'll be using pastels at some point in time). Cheers |
